California Baptist University’s Center for Formative Creativity explores the relationship between creativity and human formation. We bring together scholars, practitioners and students to examine how creativity shapes our character, faith and communities, and how cultural and technological change is reshaping creativity itself.
Our work is organized around two major projects:
How does creativity form us?
The Creative Formation Project explores how faith, character, habits and community shape creative people and their work. Through courses, research and the Fellowship of Faithful Creatives, the project helps students and practitioners develop a faithful creative identity, healthy creative practices and a deeper understanding of creativity as vocation, stewardship and service.
How do we keep creativity human?
The Human Creativity Project examines how cultural and technological change is reshaping creativity, agency and judgment. Through research, roundtables and public conversations, the project brings scholars, practitioners and industry leaders together to consider the future of human creativity, particularly in an age of artificial intelligence and increasingly automated production.
The center brings together scholars, creative practitioners, and CBU students to develop and propagate cutting-edge thinking on:
- How Christianity provides a foundation for a flourishing creative person, process, product, and purpose.
- How contemporary culture influences current thinking about creative practice.
- How a Christian creative can commend the gospel as plausible and desirable in contemporary culture through their creative person, process or product.
