Students who have earned the English degree and are interested in obtaining a California single subject (English) and/or special education teaching credential(s) would be exempt from taking the English California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET). Additionally, students could meet the credential's basic skills requirements through coursework and would be exempt from taking the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).

Surveys some of the great literary texts in the Christian tradition. Readings from primary works will provide opportunity to become familiar with a variety of voices in the history of Christian spirituality.

Language Structure and Acquisition

ENG 463

Linguistic theory and method. Includes the study of the five universal elements of language (phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) as well as the use of language and its variants in culture. Fieldwork required.

Student Learning Outcomes

Consistent with the university student outcomes, upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in English degree, graduates will be able to:

1. Write, edit and revise using clear syntax, diction and style.
2. Critically interpret texts based on literary theory, genre and context.
3. Identify, navigate and evaluate appropriate research tools and incorporate scholarly research into their own writing.
4. Explain their worldviews as well as biblical principles in relation to the creation and interpretation of literature.
5. Demonstrate familiarity with a wide variety of literary traditions including prominent authors, genres, literary movements and styles.
