You are not alone.

Over forty percent of incoming CBU students have indicated they are first-generation college students. That means neither of their parents has completed a college degree, and they are on track to becoming the first college graduate in their immediate family.

Sometimes, you may feel like you're the only one who is a little lost or uncertain. But if you ask a couple of people in your classes, the commuter lounge, residence hall, or library, you will likely meet another first-gen student just like you. You might even be surprised to learn that a significant number of CBU professors are also first-gen graduates.

To support your college journey and remind you that you can overcome obstacles to achieve your goals, the Office of Student Success has compiled some resources for you. Read a few stories from first-gen graduates for motivation and learn how to ask the right questions to unlock your success. You can also get connected to a peer mentor if you need help knowing what to do and where to go.

Stories

Stories are important because they remind us that we are not alone and that we can overcome our challenges just like others. Read some stories from CBU students, staff, and faculty, who were the first in their families to graduate college. If they did it, you can, too.

Questions

People often think that going to college is about learning the right answers. That may be true. But equally important is learning how to ask the right questions. We have a list for you. Learn about the right questions you should be asking in college in order to be successful.

Peer Mentors

Knowing the right person can sometimes help overcome frustrating situations. Peer mentors may not know all the answers, but they are the right people who can help you learn what to do and where to go to be successful here at CBU.
