Academic Regalia

Regalia is supplied, at no extra charge, to all approved graduates.

Regalia includes your cap, gown, tassel, and hood (Master’s Graduates only). Stoles are NOT included and are optional (available for purchase through the Campus Store).

All approved graduates should have already picked up their regalia. All graduates who are participating in Commencement (and Hoodings) must wear regalia.

Bachelor and Master gowns are different. Please make sure you have the correct gown.

Caps measure as a square, 9 ½”x9 ½”.

Students are allowed to decorate the top of their caps following these guidelines:

Decor must use appropriate language/images.
Decor may not be larger than the cap border.
Students may not replace the standard tassel given.

Doctoral and Master's Candidates must wear their regalia to their hooding ceremonies, and must wear their hoods and regalia to the Commencement ceremony.

All Hoodings are organized and planned by your individual school/college.

Only University approved cords and stoles may be worn at Commencement.

Approved Stoles (These Stoles are Optional and sold in the Campus Store)

CBU Stoles: All graduates are eligible to purchase a CBU Stole sold only through the Campus Store.
Great Commission Stoles: All students who have participated in a CBU Summer of Service or International Service Project (SOS/ISP) are eligible to purchase a Great Commission Stole sold only at the campus store.

Honor Cords

Bachelor degree candidates who qualify according to the listing below will receive gold honor cords. Master's Candidates are not eligible for Honor Cords. Honors are determined by a student's cumulative grade point average at the completion of the previous semester in order for you to be eligible to graduate with honors.

Official transcripts for courses being completed at another institution must be submitted to the Registrar's Office to be eligible for honors and degree posting. If all outstanding transcripts are not received by the deadline, the degree will not post regardless of the coursework completion date. It is the responsibility of the student to verify if the Office of the University Registrar has received transcripts. Honors are announced at the ceremony, but are conditional upon completion of all requirements in accordance with university policies.

Honor cords will be given out when regalia is picked up or at Commencement check in, and are given to qualifying graduates, free of charge.

Honors are awarded according to the following grade point average:

Cum Laude, 3.50
Magna Cum Laude, 3.70
Summa Cum Laude, 3.90

APPROVED COMMENCEMENT STOLE (Optional)

Alpha Chi (Blue and Green Cords)

Distribution of cords takes place through the Office of Student Success. Membership is based on academic achievement and outstanding character traits. Juniors and Seniors whose overall grade point average places them in the upper ten percent of their class are eligible for consideration. Alpha Kappa Delta (Teal Cord)

Membership in Alpha Kappa Delta is an earned honor. The purpose of this international sociology honor society is to promote scholarship, but the focus has always been contributing back to the community both locally and globally. Undergraduates must be sociology majors or demonstrate a serious interest in sociology within an official program of a host institution with a chartered chapter of the Society. Students must be at least a junior, rank in the top 35 percent of their class, or an overall GPA of 3.3, have a sociology GPA of at least 3.0, and have taken at least four courses in sociology at the host institution. Alpha Phi Sigma (Gold and Blue Cords)

Alpha Phi Sigma is a National Criminal Justice Honor Society. Baccalaureate students who have completed three full-time semesters, have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale in a minimum of four courses related to the criminal justice field, and rank in the top 35% of their class are eligible for consideration.

Alpha Sigma Lambda (Gold and Burgundy Cords)

Cords will be distributed by the Office of Student Success. Alpha Sigma Lambda is the oldest and largest national honor society for non-traditional students (typically adults also engaged in professional careers). It recognizes those students who achieve and maintain outstanding scholastic standards and leadership characteristics while adeptly handling additional responsibilities of work and family. To be considered for membership, students must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in an undergraduate program. Eta Sigma Gamma (Green and Gold Cords)

Eta Sigma Gamma is the national honor society in health education. Eta Sigma Gamma’s primary purpose is to elevate the standards, ideals, competence, and ethics of individuals in the field of health education and promotion. The Eta Sigma Gamma insignia and honor cord reflects the ideals of teaching, research, and service in health education and promotion. ESG recognizes the top 15 percent of students and professionals with an academic major or minor in health education. Global Engagement Cord (Yellow, Red, and Blue Cord)

The Global Engagement cord recognizes students and faculty that have been involved in academic discipline-driven engagement experiences around the world. The yellow in the cord represents academic discipline, the blue symbolizes service, and the red represents faith. Kappa Mu Epsilon (Silver Cord)

This Mathematical Sciences Department honor society recognizes outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level. Membership is open to students who have completed at least three (3) college mathematics courses (including at least one [1] semester of calculus) with an overall average of 3.00 or better. Members must be at least second-semester sophomore and rank in the top 35 percent of their class. Lambda Nu (Green and Maroon Cords)

Lambda Nu is a national honor society for the radiologic and imaging sciences that is based on academic achievement and professional involvement. The local chapter at CBU is California Chi Beta. Invitation to join requires that each student must be in the Radiologic Sciences program, maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.65 after one semester, and hold membership in a professional organization. Members wear green and maroon chords; maroon represents the radiologic and imaging sciences and green represents the health professions. Military Service (Red, White, and Blue Cords)

The Military Service cord is a special recognition to show California Baptist University's gratitude and respect for the men and women who have made an unwavering commitment to both their nation and their academic studies. The cord represents the sacrifice, service and commitment to excellence that all military members and veterans share. Pi Sigma Alpha (Red, White, and Black Cords)

Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Honor Society for Political Science and International Studies founded in 1920. In order to be inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, students must have completed 64 or more semester credits; completed at least 12 semester credits in Political Science including at least one upper-division course; earned an average grade of B or higher in all courses in Political Science; and earned an average grade of B+ or higher in all courses. Sigma Delta Pi (Red and Gold Cords)

The Spanish Honor Society welcomes Spanish majors and minors based upon academic achievement. Undergraduate students in the upper 35 percent of the class, with a grade point average of a 3.0 or higher in Spanish are eligible for consideration. Sigma Tau Delta (Cardinal and Black Cords)

This society welcomes English majors and minors based upon academic achievement. Undergraduate students in the upper 35 percent of their class, with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in English are eligible for consideration. Graduate students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 or higher are eligible for consideration. Sigma Theta Tau International (Sigma), Chi Mu Chapter (Purple and White Cords)

The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma, is to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. CBU’s local chapter, Chi Mu, invites student candidates who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, academic integrity, and professional leadership potential. Undergraduate nursing students in the top 35% of the class with a minimum grade point average above 3.5 are invited to join upon completion of half of their nursing classes. Graduate nursing students with a minimum grade point average above 3.5 are invited to join upon completion of a quarter of their graduate education. All student members receive purple and white honor cords during a special induction ceremony prior to graduation.
