students abroad

A group from the Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education traveled to Southeast Asia for 10 days as part of their comparative and diverse global education coursework.

Led by biblical truth, the School of Education has a mission to prepare educational leaders of high moral character who are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to create inclusive, lifelong learners throughout the world.

Our students, both undergraduate and graduate, have access to a variety of international experiences that broaden their perspective and impact. These opportunities include:

  • Academic engagement experiences
  • International fieldwork and student teaching
  • International careers in education

Each program is designed for students to gain firsthand insight into diverse educational systems and practices which empower them to grow as culturally responsive leaders, ready to make a difference in schools and communities around the world.

Academic Engagement Experiences

Academic engagement experiences are designed for students to explore educational systems outside of the United States while they are enrolled in a qualifying class.

Led by experienced School of Education faculty, students will dive into diverse school environments — international, private, public and more.

Additionally, students will spend time being exposed to local religions, cultural landmarks and local traditions that shape the identity of the local people.

Through this journey, students will gain insight that directs their future career and broadens their global perspective.

International Fieldwork and Student Teaching

International fieldwork in school counseling and student teaching placements expand students’ cultural competence and equip them with the skills necessary to excel globally.

Qualified candidates can complete a portion of their student teaching or 200 hours of school counseling overseas.

  • Student teaching candidates complete the first half of their student teaching in a California placement and the second half in an approved school in another country.
  • School counselor candidates can complete 200 alternative practicum hours in an approved overseas placement.

The School of Education partners with organizations and schools known for excellence in their field to place students in approved schools worldwide.

International Careers in Education

Graduates of the School of Education are living our mission across the globe, bringing inclusive, high-quality education to diverse communities.

By choosing to work internationally, these alumni are not only expanding their own horizons but also embodying the values of moral leadership and lifelong learning.

Through education, they foster meaningful cross-cultural connections and transform lives. Their work reflects a deep commitment to our mission which guides them as they inspire the next generation of learners worldwide.
