The Office of Field Education is always looking to partner with community agencies as a potential field internship practicum site. MSW/BSW Field education provides a bridge from conceptual to applied knowledge in social work through hands-on practical application in a practicum setting.  Field instruction is an integral part of the MSW and BSW degree programs. Opportunities to integrate classroom knowledge with social work practice and develop professional skills in fieldwork settings are the primary purpose for field internships.

The field experience should be closely supervised by credentialed professionals who hold an MSW degree within the agency setting or an onsite supervisor/preceptor (or both) who can provide guidance and instruction to the student interns regarding agency needs that support social work skills. The agency team is supported by a Faculty Liaison who provides direction and assistance during on-campus seminar classes and site visits to support the agency in meeting the needs of the student interns.

All MSW and BSW Student interns are committed to an agency for one academic school year at each agency setting, which runs from September to the end of April.  Additionally, a Summer Block option is available for first-year students, which is completed between May and August, for a total of 400 hours.

  • BSW students are required to intern 16-20 hours per week, for a total of 400 (200 hours per semester) per academic year.
  • First year MSW students are required to intern 16-20 hours per week, for a total of 400 hours (200 hours per semester) per academic year.
  • Second-year MSW students are required to intern 20-24 hours per week, for a total of 500 hours (250 hours per semester) per academic year.

Weekly supervision is a requirement of the social work program.  Supervision must be provided by an MSW at the agency for either one hour of individual or two hours of group supervision, weekly.  If your agency does not have an MSW onsite, we may be able to provide one for you.

If you are interested in hosting an MSW or BSW intern and would like more information about our program, please email jlatham@calbaptist.edu.  Building the social work community is something that the California Baptist University Office of Field Education is committed to. Your partnership is valuable and essential in educating new social workers to help improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
