What to Expect During your 1 on 1 Session with a SPP Consultant
Sport and performance psychology consulting is a collaborative process in which psychological, counseling, and athletic performance principles are applied with individuals, teams, and organizations to help them move from their current state to their desired state. Overall, the goal of consulting is to facilitate the development of mental and emotional skills, attitudes, perspectives, strategies, and processes that lead to optimal performance, well-being, and personal growth in the individual (AASP®).
Be prepared to learn more about yourself as both an athlete, or performer, and a person. The session(s) that you have with a SPP consultant will be primarily focused on exploring anything related to your performance and will be kept confidential between you and the consultant unless there is any indication of harm to self or others. During the intake process, you will be asked several questions about yourself and will be asked to sign some paperwork. As the client, you have the opportunity to disclose as much or as minimal information as you feel comfortable with your SPP consultant. To get the most out of your session(s), it is important that you, as the client, are actively engaging and applying the principles and skills discussed throughout your session(s). As much effort as you put in, you will get out of your session(s).
As you are the expert, SPP consultants’ purpose is to guide you to discover your own potential. They may help you better understand your mental strengths and areas to improve, provide skills or techniques to unlock your peak performance, and create a safe space for you to unpack more about yourself. Throughout your session(s), you will be able to, but not limited to, discuss performance concerns as well as mental blocks or confusion, explore technical issues that could influence your mental game, gain additional insight on your experiences and challenges, find what mind-body connection is for you, engage in devising a mental training plan to help you overcome obstacles or reach goals related to performance, participate in exercises to increase self-awareness and reflection, assess growth and development, recognize and establish consistency as an athlete/performer, reframe events and situations, learn self-regulation skills to enhance emotional, mental, and physical control, navigate change, and build a personal toolbox of skills that help you highly function in sport, and life overall.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout your experience while working with an SPP consultant, you are able to ask/express these as necessary. Your SPP consultant is here to guide and help you unlock your best performance and close the gap between where you are and where you want to be in your sport or career.
