This course provides a comprehensive survey of human service theories and applications, focusing on diverse consumer populations in a wide range of settings. Students will examine significant historical developments, legal and compliance issues, and ethics in the human service field. This course also addresses the complex interactions between human service professionals and consumers and examines systems theory approaches to resolve issues commonly encountered by human services professionals. This course examines theoretical and practical ethical standards for management in a variety of human service settings. Students assess their own values and professionalism and prepare for future professional growth. Students will develop a personal and professional framework for ethical decision-making after studying a range of different models. This course also emphasizes the knowledge of relevant ethical codes in human services. (3 Units)

This course examines the importance of ensuring sustainable funding as a necessary skill for administrators of human service organizations. The course covers various strategies for securing funding from public and private sources, including researching public policy, understanding industry trends, and mastering the art of grant writing. Special emphasis is placed on funding and grants' legal and ethical considerations. Throughout the course, students will work on completing a brief grant proposal. (3 Units)

This course introduces students to social policies and programs designed to effect positive change in the quality of people?s lives. Students learn about the cycle of policy development, implementation, and evaluation. This course emphasizes how social policies affect the direct practice of human service professionals and the role of advocacy and coalition building in influencing social action. The course also highlights the role of the human service professional in impacting the legislation that governs society. (3 Units)

This is an introductory, graduate level public health program planning, development, and evaluation course that broadly addresses program planning models, process of program development and methods of evaluation in the area of public health. This course will be focused on the following three areas: (1) study of program planning models, (2) process of program development, and (3) methods of evaluation in public health settings. (3 Units)

This course provides an introduction to research methods that examines two major approaches in research paradigms. The course will study in depth different types of quantitative research designs such as experimental, quasi-experimental, and descriptive approaches and students will initiate a research project that investigates behavior, knowledge, or attitude factors that help students to understand the complexity of behavior change through the use of qualitative and quantitative data. (3 Units)

Leaders in government agencies and nonprofit organizations are challenged to lead their organizations toward solutions to complex problems. This course examines administrative leadership theories and concepts from a variety of perspectives and administrative settings. (3 Units)

Examination of the effects of therapeutic interventions on culturally distinct populations. (3 Units)

A study of the developmental cycle of the human organism from a cognitive, psychological, sociological, and moral perspective. Emphasis is placed on theories and research related to child development. (3 Units)

This course introduces the student to the contemporary context of community mental health settings. Course content emphasizes recovery-oriented treatment for severe mental illness, disaster and trauma response, services for victims of abuse, the homeless, foster care services, case management, client advocacy, in-home and in-school services, bilingual client services, professional collaboration and medical family therapy. This is an elective course for which students wishing to pursue licensure as a Professional Clinical Counselor in the State of California should register. (3 Units)
