The Master of Science in Human Services focuses on problem-solving, communications, analytical and research-oriented skills for professionals seeking to maximize impact in public, private and nonprofit organizations. The one-year, 30-unit graduate program allows professional practitioners around the globe to manage their time effectively through eight-week online courses, preparing them for employment in a wide range of career opportunities.

The MS in Human Services program does not require licensure or residency, unlike related programs. It prepares individuals for various management and leadership roles within the broader human services field from direct client interaction to program administration and policy development.

Program Details

HMS 580: Policy, Social Change and Advocacy in Human Services

This course introduces students to social policies and programs designed to effect positive change in the quality of people’s lives. Students learn about the cycle of policy development, implementation and evaluation. 

HMS 550: Sustainable Funding and Grant Writing

This course examines the importance of ensuring sustainable funding as a necessary skill for administrators of human service organizations. This course presents a number of ways to ensure funding from public and private sources. 

PSY 536: Community Mental Health and Counseling

This course introduces the student to the contemporary context of community mental health settings. Course content emphasizes recovery-oriented treatment for severe mental illness, disaster and trauma response, services for victims of abuse, the homeless, foster care services, case management, client advocacy, in-home and in-school services, bilingual client services, professional collaboration, and medical family therapy.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Human Services will be able to:

  1. Analyze and apply human service theories and their applications to diverse client populations across various service settings, demonstrating critical thinking and practical integration. 
  2. Critically evaluate quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methodologies relevant to human services, with an emphasis on selecting the most appropriate approach for diverse research questions. 
  3. Synthesize a personal, professional, and ethical decision-making framework in human services practice, incorporating theoretical perspectives and ethical principles. 
  4. Critically examine and apply administrative theories, principles, and leadership skills set in the context of human services organizations and settings, evaluating their effectiveness in promoting organizational success. 
  5. Design and implement needs assessments, methodologies, and evaluation strategies to guide informed, evidence-based decision-making regarding program effectiveness and organizational viability in human services. 
  6. Create sustainable funding strategies through comprehensive grant writing efforts for human service organizations, demonstrating an advanced understanding of financial resource development. 
  7. Evaluate conditions that foster or hinder the optimal functioning of individuals, families, and communities, integrating theoretical frameworks and empirical research findings. 
  8. Critically assess multicultural and pluralistic trends in human services, evaluating their impact on service delivery and shaping inclusive, culturally competent practice. 
  9. Analyze the policy development, implementation, and evaluation cycle, with a focus on social policies and their impact on human service professionals and service recipients.
