What is counseling psychology?
Counseling psychology focuses on theory and research for helping people to have satisfying lives – personal goals, careers and relationships. At CBU, our emphasis is on relationship enhancement so that CBU graduates will be eligible for licensure provided other requirements, like post-degree internships, are met.
What are the program's entry dates and application deadline?
The online MS in Counseling Psychology has entry points throughout the year – in the fall, spring and summer semesters.
How long does the admission process take?
The admission process for online applications is quick. Upon receipt of the completed application, the online coordinator reviews it and makes a recommendation.
What is the GPA requirement?
Minimum 2.75 GPA on last 60/90 units
Is there an accreditation for the MS in Counseling Psychology program?
CBU is regionally accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The MS in Counseling Psychology is approved by the state of California Board of Behavioral Sciences to offer the necessary program to be eligible for licensure as an MFT or LPC. In other words, CBU’s MS in Counseling Psychology meets the educational requirements for licensure in the state of California. Students that reside out of state are encouraged to check with their state’s licensure board to determine eligibility.
How long does the program take to complete?
It is designed for a minimum of two years. However, most students take 2.5 years to complete.
When do classes meet?
Most of the online counseling psychology classes are offered asynchronously, meaning students can complete the weekly learning activities as they fit into their schedules. There are four counseling psychology classes that meet synchronously, meaning students will sign into a virtual class for live interactions with classmates and their professor. These classes are traditionally held on Tuesday evenings. There are no residency requirements for completing CBU classes.
Am I required to have work experience to enter the program?
No. Experience doing therapy is not a prerequisite for entry into the program.
Will I be able to get the classes I need when I need them?
Yes. Online students are pre-enrolled in their courses upon registration. It is recommended that students follow the degree completion plan provided by their advisors. This plan is designed to allow the student to complete the degree.
What types of careers can I pursue with a degree in counseling psychology?
Our graduates find themselves in many different people helping roles. Some of our graduates work for county mental health agencies. Many of our graduates start private practices. Others work for counseling centers and other non-profits providing mental health resources to those in need.
