California CBEST and CSET Guidelines
Updated 11/21/2024
CBEST - California Guidelines
The California Education Code and Title 5 Regulations allow applicants to use their bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution to meet the Basic Skills Requirement. If you do not meet this requirement, please see other options to complete the Basic Skills Requirement (https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/basic-skills-requirement-(cl-667)) on the CTC site.
CSET - California Guidelines
California Education Code requires that all candidates for a teaching credential must demonstrate they are proficient in the subject matter area of their intended credential. Recent action by the Governor and the Legislature on AB 130 (Chapter 44, Statutes of 2021) has expanded the ways in which candidates may demonstrate subject matter proficiency.
Most applicants can meet the subject matter competency requirement through one of two ways:
- Subject-matter competency via approved major degree:
Single Subject Credential Approved Majors- Art
- English
- Math
- Music
- Physical Education
- Science
- Social Science
- World Language - Spanish
- For a full list of approved majors, please refer to the Credential Information Guide.
Multiple Subject Credentials Approved Majors
- Liberal Studies
- Liberal Arts
- Elementary Education
- For a full list of approved majors, please refer to the Credential Information Guide.
-
Subject-matter competency examination (CSET)
Students that do not meet the approved major for their intended credential, can meet the subject-matter competency by CSET exam. Students must pass all subtests for the subject matter area in which they are seeking to be credentialed.
