Set up courses for assessment
How to set up courses for assessment
Step 1: Decide which option you are doing for assessment
- Do you have SLO rubrics?
- If no, you are doing the “case-by-case” option below.
- If yes, answer question 2.
- Will you be using the SAME ASSIGMENT in multiple sections of a course to assess an SLO?
- If no, you are doing option “Independent” option below.
- If yes, you are doing option “Standardize” option below.
Standardized option
Description: The key assignment is pre-loaded with outcomes and is pushed out to all sections.
Setup
- Submit this form to create a development blueprint
- Ensure Educational Effectiveness has created your outcome rows in Canvas.
- Create the assignment in the blueprint, which will be used for assessing the SLO
- Create a grading rubric for that assignment
-watch this tutorial on creating a rubric in Canvas
- Find your program outcome that is being assessed with this assignment
- Add that outcome to your grading rubric (Pro tip: make sure “use this rubric for grading” is checked)
- watch this video to see how to do steps 5 and 6
Deploy
- Remind all professors teaching sections of this class to use that rubric to grade/assess that assignment
Assess
- After the semester is over, go to intelligent insights “ask your data”
Independent Option
Description: There may be multiple sections of a course, but you don’t control the assignment in other professors’ sections of that course. Or you only teach a single section of this class, so don’t need a standardized option (above) at this time. You will be doing a report called "learning mastery"
Setup
- Ensure Educational Effectiveness has created your outcome rows in Canvas
- Find the assignment in your current version of your course, which will be used for assessing the SLO
- Ensure there is a grading rubric for that assignment
-watch this tutorial on creating a rubric in Canvas
- Find your program outcome that is being assessed with this assignment
- Add that outcome to your grading rubric (Pro tip: make sure “use this rubric for grading” is checked)
watch this video to see how to do steps 4 and 5
- In course settings—>feature options, ensure that “learning mastery” is enabled
Deploy
- Use that rubric to grade/assess that assignment
Assess
- After the semester is over, go to gradebook, and click “grade book” dropdown menu, and select “learning mastery gradebook”. See the Outcomes report for your class section
-click this video to see how to use "learning mastery gradebook" views.
Case-by-case Option
Description: You don’t have SLO rubrics at this time.
Implement
- Consult your purple card “criteria for success” in Weave to see what benchmark you set. What assignment did you plan to use? How did you plan to measure student achievement?
- Work with Educational Effectiveness to find a plan for assessing this outcome.
