Chemical Sciences

Chemistry is central to a wide array of careers in exciting fields. Whether you’re looking to enter health care, research, industry, education, pharmacy, or forensics we have a program for you. Our major in biochemistry and molecular biology is a favorite with analytically minded students interested in pursuing medical research or wanting to become doctors, dentists and more. Our chemistry major is our most flexible, where graduates go on to advanced degrees and work in education, research and industry just to name a few. Forensic chemistry is our most unique major, where you’ll learn enough chemistry to work in research or industry, but also learn to apply chemistry in forensics and law enforcement careers. Finally, pharmaceutical science allows students to learn the foundations for a career in pharmacy while completing the unique prerequisites for pharmacy school.

Some students have passions too diverse to fit within a single major, which is why we also offer minors in chemistry and forensic chemistry to complement the wide array of other majors available at CBU. In these programs it is our mission to provide strong academic foundations, hands-on laboratory experience and a deep faith foundation to equip students for future success.

Dr. Schacht

We are in the unique position of having a roughly 10:1 student to faculty ratio in chemistry, which enables us to provide research opportunities to every one of our students where you can gain even more practical experience for your future career. This ratio also allows us to spend significant time mentoring our students in office hours, and in our departmental events like our BBQ which takes place every semester at a faculty member’s home. We enjoy these opportunities to build a personal relationship with each of our students as we provide everything from homework help to career counseling and more. If you are interested in studying one of the "central sciences" in a faith-based atmosphere, I hope you will consider all that CBU has to offer.

Patrick Schacht, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Biochemistry. Department Chair, Chemical Sciences.
