Why Study Pharmaceutical Sciences at CBU?
Research and learn in laboratories
At CBU, pharmaceutical sciences courses are taught by full-time faculty members in state-of-the-art labs, giving students both hands-on experience and individual attention. CBU is a medium-sized university. This means, unlike tiny schools, we have very well-equipped modern labs, and unlike very large schools we give our students extensive training and hands-on time with advanced lab equipment. Additionally, the chemistry department regularly hires current students to assist with preparing solutions, maintaining equipment and even teaching some introductory labs, allowing for paid opportunities to gain experience and build your resume outside the classroom.
Prepare for a career in the field
Students who graduate with a bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical sciences can continue on to graduate programs in pharmacy (PharmD) and related areas in addition to entry-level pharmaceutical research, sales and industry positions.
What You'll Learn
Upon completion of the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate competency in the core science disciplines (chemistry and biology) at levels comparable to national standards.
- Critically analyze and discuss scientific journal articles.
- Critically analyze and discuss selected contemporary and/or controversial issues related to the pharmaceutical industry or pharmacy-related professions, enabling them to be informed professionals who can participate in the public debate and discourse regarding these issues.
- Demonstrate proficiency in accurately conveying scientific data, both orally and in writing.
Program Details
BIO 440: Pharmacology
This course will introduce the student to basic and clinical pharmacology as related to the promotion of health and alleviation of disease. The course will consider drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, and pharmacodynamic effects on the human body.
CHE 443: Biochemistry I with Lab
A survey of the chemical reactions in living systems. Attention given to enzymes.
BIO 305: Microbiology with Lab
A general survey of microorganisms with an emphasis on bacteria. The study includes morphologic characteristics, growth, reproduction, metabolism, genetics and taxonomy of bacteria; a general survey of viruses, fungi, protozoans and algae; and microbiology of food, water, soil and industry.
