Department of Mathematical Sciences

The department seeks to train our students analytically and theoretically in the field of mathematics, statistics, and physics, all framed within a biblical worldview, properly equipping them with the quantitative tools to positively impact society.

Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at California Baptist University has various exciting paths for anyone seeking an exciting and fulfilling career. We offer baccalaureate majors in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, data analytics and sports analytics. By choosing one of these, our students can follow their passions into big data, risk management, mathematical modeling, mathematical research, teaching or many other areas.

In addition to a variety of baccalaureate degrees, we offer a master’s degree in applied mathematics. For students in another field seeking to equip their major with powerful computational and mathematical skills, we offer minors in actuarial science, applied statistics, mathematics and physics. We also offer a certificate in actuarial science.

About Us

The CBU Mathematical Sciences Department prepares students for world-changing careers. Our recent alumni serve at data-mining firms, consulting, software engineering, high-school teaching, actuarial science, criminal policy analysis and many other world-changing, community-serving careers.

Our highly trained faculty members teach character, knowledge and skill through faith-based lectures, labs, research and internships. Students experience and contribute to the culture of the mathematical sciences by participating in the local and global community through clubs, conferences and research with our faculty. Moreover, students have the opportunity to bring their innovative ideas to the table and develop research projects with faculty advisors that empower and encourage the mathematical explorations of their students. These research collaborations often result in presentations at conferences like the Joint Mathematics Meetings hosted by the AMS and MAA, or other conferences hosted by SIAM and many other organizations. In various cases, undergraduate students co-author and publish their research papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Our programs prepare our students for graduate school. In recent years, over 25% of our mathematics majors advance to Ph.D. programs. The majority of these students received full-tuition scholarships and received additional financial support through research and/or teaching fellowships. In the past five years, our seniors were accepted to graduate schools in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics and economics at ASU, Auburn, Claremont, UCR and USC, to name a few.

Our faculty members seek to restore the faith foundations of the mathematical sciences. Rooted in faith, the practice of mathematical sciences is a form of devotion and ministry:

  1. We glorify God by unearthing the beauty of mathematics for ourselves (through learning to study mathematics) and for others (through learning to teach mathematics).
  2. We lovingly serve others by solving problems that are relevant to an ever-changing and globalized landscape via various mathematical sciences.
