What is Counseling Psychology? Counseling psychology focuses on theory and research for helping people to have satisfying
lives – personal goals, careers and relationships. At CBU, our emphasis is on relationship
enhancement so that CBU graduates will be eligible for licensure, provided other requirements,
like post-degree work, are met.
What are the program's entry dates and application deadline? The MSCP has entry points throughout the year – Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
How long does the admission process take? The admission process for applications is quick. Upon receipt of the completed application,
the Program Director reviews it and makes a recommendation. Students will usually
be notified of their admission decision in 5-10 days.
What is the GPA requirement? Minimum 2.75 GPA or 2.75 on last 60/90 units
Is there an accreditation for MSCP? CBU is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior
College and University Commission (WSCUC). The MSCP is approved by the state of California, Board of Behavioral Sciences,
to offer the necessary program to be eligible for licensure as an MFT or the LPCC.
In other words, CBU’s MSCP meets the educational requirements for licensure in the
State of California. Students who reside out of state are encouraged to check with
their state’s licensure board to determine eligibility.
How long does the program take to complete? It is designed for a minimum of two years. However, there are 3 and 4 year options
available for campus students.
When do classes meet? Most MSCP students attend classes usually 2 days per week. Generally, MSCP courses
begin at 4:00 PM.
Am I required to have work experience to enter the program? No. Experience doing therapy is not a prerequisite for entry into the program.
Will I be able to get the classes I need when I need them? Yes. Once our students are accepted, they will work with their success coach to register
for their courses. It is recommended that students schedule a meeting with their
success coach as soon as possible to get the registration completed. The plan is
designed to allow the on-campus student to complete the degree in 2, 3, or 4 years,
depending on the time frame they choose.
What types of careers can I pursue with a degree in MSCP? Our graduates find themselves in many different people helping roles. Some of our
graduates work for county mental health agencies. Many of our graduates start a private
practice. Others work for counseling centers and other non-profits providing mental
health resources to those in need.
