This course will introduce and reinforce the skills necessary to perform biological research including discussions of the scientific method, literature research, reading scientific journal articles, analyzing scientific data, reporting research findings in both written and visual formats, critiquing original research, and science ethics. It will also explore field work opportunities available for students. The main focus of the course is on complex concepts from extra-solar astrophysics (astronomy outside of our solar system), including star formation, stellar evolution, supernova and stellar remnants, black holes, galaxy formation, dark matter, the large-scale structure of the universe, and the Creation of the universe. The purpose of this course is to provide a broad baseline of conceptual understanding. Student will also learn how to analyze and understand new discoveries in astronomy as they are related directly to the professional astronomical community, in addition to understanding astronomy articles that are presented through more mainstream media.
