Spanish Minor

The Spanish minor at California Baptist University is designed to provide students with the basic critical skills and knowledge needed to complement a broad variety of majors.

Prerequisites

Choose one of the following sequences:

SPA115 Elementary Spanish I

A study of the fundamentals of the Spanish language. Emphasis is on the ability to write, read, speak, and understand simple Spanish through a variety of activities, both in and out of the classroom, homework assignments, and language lab participation. Must pass with a C- or better to continue in SPA 125. (3 units; Fall/Spring)

SPA125 Elementary Spanish II

Completion of the fundamentals of the Spanish language with emphasis upon correct pronunciation and mastery of a practical vocabulary. Practice on oral and written expression through a variety of activities, both in and out of the classroom, homework assignments, and language lab participation. Simple study of Hispanic civilization. Prerequisite: SPA 110 or 115. (3 units; Fall/Spring)

This course will build upon and further develop the informal knowledge of Spanish that heritage learners bring to the classroom and cultivate formal speaking, reading, and writing abilities. SPA230 Spanish for Heritage Speakers II

This course is designed specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish with oral proficiency, but little formal training in the language. It will emphasize activities which will acquaint students with Spanish in its written form and which will expand students' overall knowledge of the language. This course will review the principles of Spanish grammar, emphasizing their application to composition. Cannot receive credit for both SPA 223 and 230. Prerequisite: SPA 115, 125, 130, or assessment. (3 units; Fall/Spring)

SPA315 Intro to Hispanic Literature

This course explores different genres of Spanish and Hispanic literatures, focusing on critical reading and ways of writing about literature. Throughout this course, students will gain a basic understanding of current literary theory and literary strategies, while examining literary movements in the Spanish-speaking world and their socio-historical contexts. Prerequisite: SPA 213, 223, 230, 233, or 305. (3 units; Fall/Spring)
