Standard MSW
Application Requirements

 

 
  1. Application for admission with a $45 graduate application fee. 
  2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or the evaluated equivalency.  
  3. Minimum GPA of 2.75. Applicants with a GPA below 2.75 may be considered for admission. 
  4. Official sealed transcripts showing completion of a bachelor's degree. Additional transcripts may be required for prerequisite and GPA verification.
  5. Three electronic recommendations from sources who can address your potential for success. It is preferred that one recommendation be from a professor or instructor. Family and friends may not complete recommendations.
  6. Prerequisite: Statistics
  7. Comprehensive essay that includes:
    • Purpose for entering the program
    • Experiences that have directed your interest toward social work
    • Long term professional goals
    • What makes you a good candidate for the profession and for graduate school
    • Issues of social justice you are most passionate about and why
    • Religious background, present pattern of spiritual growth, fundamentals of personal faith and the relationship between your faith and professional goals
    • Reasons for choosing to study at California Baptist University
  8. Successful interview[s] with MSW program director
  9. An applicant whose first language is not English and/or does not have a degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction is required to demonstrate English language proficiency.

 

Advanced Standing MSW
Application Requirements

 

Students who have a BSW degree in social work from a CSWE accredited university are eligible to apply for Advanced Standing into CBU’s MSW program. If admitted, students may complete their MSW in 30-38 units. Preference will be given to students who have completed their BSW degree in social work no more than seven years prior to applying to the MSW program, and who achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher in all social work practice and field work courses. Students whose BSW degree conferred more than seven years ago will be asked to demonstrate their ongoing engagement in the field, continuing education and commitment to the profession in the admission interview with the program director and/or appointed designee.

Specific Application Requirements for the Advanced Standing MSW are:

  1. Application for admission with a $45 graduate application fee.
  2. A bachelor’s of social work degree from a CSWE accredited program, preferably within the last 5 years.
  3. Official sealed transcripts from every university attended.
  4. A minimum of a 2.75 cumulative GPA with a 3.0 GPA in social work courses.
  5. Submission of a Personal Statement. Personal Statements should be 5-7 pages long (double spaced) and address the following:
    • Describe your motivation for pursuing an MSW, your career goals and your reason for choosing to study at CBU.
    • Discuss your background in the field of social work, if any, and/or your volunteer experiences in the field.
    • Describe what personal qualities make you a good fit for the profession and for graduate study.
    • Describe your faith journey and the role of faith in your life.
    • What issues of social justice are you most passionate about and why?
  6. Three electronic recommendations from sources familiar with your professionalism, aptitude for graduate study, experience in the field (volunteer or otherwise) and your interest and suitability for the field of Advanced Social Work practice. At least one reference must be a social work faculty member or field instructor. 
  7. A successful admission interview with the MSW program director. Please bring your Field Evaluation if possible.
  8. Signed MSW Student Conduct Form.
  9. Prerequisites to the MSW program: Students must have passed Statistics with a C. Students who have not taken or passed Statistics may be conditionally admitted but must have successfully completed the course prior to beginning the MSW program.
  10. For students with Saturday conflicts (Seventh Day Adventist or military) – referral options for alternative classes will be provided by your program director or designated faculty appointee.
