BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

Sustainability is the science of developing, planning and providing for the current global population's needs while not exceeding our future generations' resources. In light of this goal, CBU's sustainability program provides a cross-disciplinary approach, including courses in urban agriculture, social issues, sustainable development and environmental studies. Students graduating with this degree will have the skills to develop innovative solutions to global challenges while helping to protect the natural environment and build resilient communities.

Why study sustainability at CBU?

Sustainability is not just a buzz word, it's becoming one of the most sought-after aspects of business. It's estimated that 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris reside in our oceans. As statistics like this come to light, more and more companies are wanting to incorporate sustainable practices into their business models. CBU is dedicated to training the next generation of sustainability experts. Students will have opportunities to work closely with faculty members and assist with research projects as well as engage in community service and leadership.

Urban Agriculture Lab

ENV 350L

This laboratory experience is designed to teach students about the basic concepts of urban agriculture. Students will gain hands on experience and will be taught a wide range of agricultural principles.

Social Issues and Sustainable Development

ENV 410

This course will review the major social issues of the four “underdeveloped” continents (Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East), and examine sustainable development practices and principles which impact those issues.

Sustainability and Conservation with Lab

ENV 430

This is an interdisciplinary course that examines the human impact on biodiversity and the earth. The course emphasizes the development of strategies for preserving populations, species, biological communities and entire ecosystems.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to describe the current state of knowledge regarding global resources and identify examples of social, economic and environmental impacts resulting from the challenges associated with inequity.
Students will be able to critically analyze and discuss scientific journal articles in urban agriculture, social issues, sustainable development, environmental studies and ecological impacts.
Students will be able to critically analyze and discuss contemporary and/or controversial issues in sustainability, enabling them to be informed citizens and participants in the public debate and discussion involving sustainability issues.
Students will articulate a comprehensive Christian worldview that integrates diverse approaches to sustainability.
Students will apply their knowledge of sustainability through hands-on project or field experience related to sustainability to develop innovative solutions to global challenges.

Bonjun Koo

Professor of Environmental Science

I am an environmental biogeochemist and an environmental science adviser at CBU. I help direct CBU’s environmental science program and its research activities on the environmental biogeochemistry of trace elements, carbon sequestration, and bioremediation. I help teach and inspire students to be good Christian stewards of the land with which God has put in our trust throughout many extracurricular activities such as Ecotour, study abroad, Arbor Day activities, beach clean-up, safari park field trip, etc.
