Designed for the music major whose primary instrument is other than piano. The course material will focus on the rudiments of piano playing, including acquisition of the Technical Skills (Items 1-10) of Piano Proficiency (i.e. scales, arpeggios, and chords). Emphasis on musical instruments, and be able to describe their significance in a culture's folklore, religion and history; fundamental elements of music and how they vary in different traditions; the effects of cultural influences such as gender and ethnically on the perception, interpretations and performance of music; forces of nationalism, acculturation, and westernization and their effect on musical traditions. Introduction to a broad perspective of the many ways musicians use computers. Emphasis on historic milestones, current issues, and practical skill in using software and hardware in music technology. Prerequisite: Declared music major, minor, or concentration. (2 units; Fall/Spring)

Basic conducting skills, principles, and rehearsal techniques for choral and instrumental music. Observations of choral and instrumental ensemble rehearsals. Prerequisite: MUS 214. (2 units; Fall)

An examination of Scripture in order to develop a biblical theology of worship and its application in the local church. Students will learn about the development of worship practices from the Old and New Testaments and learn to apply hermeneutical principles to understanding present-day worship applications. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Music or Bachelor of Music degree must enroll in Senior Recital and Project in the semester they intend to perform their Senior Recital, typically the last semester of their senior year. Students may enroll in the course after successfully completing the Applied Music Proficiency and meeting the performance expectations described in the Undergraduate Handbook for their specific course of study. Piano Proficiency completion required. Requirements for recital length are determined by the student's major. Teaching experience in a school setting under the guidance of a university supervisor with a cooperating teacher in the school. An exploration of the methods of organizing music. Study focuses on traditional homophonic forms such as variation, rondo, sonata, symphony, and popular song. Prerequisites: MUS 224 and 225. (2 units; Fall)

ntroduction to music teaching as a profession. This course introduces philosophical foundations, pedagogical approaches, learning environments, curriculum and instruction, content standards, social context, and music instruction and learning with technology. This course is designed to prepare students to teach jazz music. Students will receive a fundamental background in aspects of administration, preparation, directing, rehearsal, teaching, and evaluation of the various types of jazz ensembles: big bands, combos, and vocal jazz groups. Instruction for Music Education majors in the fundamentals of vocal tone production, breathing, breath control, and posture, and approaches for working with groups of singers in classroom teaching. Topics will include proper vowel formation, vocal warm-ups, register phenomena, diction and vocal health. Students will learn songs as examples for class topics, with the possible opportunity for individual performance and attention to individual problems. Prerequisites: MUS 214 and 215. A study of the orchestral instruments; scoring for full orchestration or small ensembles. Students do extensive work in the computer lab working with notation software. Prerequisite: MUS 224. (3 units; Fall)

A study of advanced methods and strategies for teaching music within specific contexts (choral, band, orchestra) in middle and high school settings. Students will create and teach lessons, expressing expertise in teaching methods and strategies, as well as observing master teachers in the classroom and studio. 30 hours of observation are required. Prerequisites: MUS 405, and either 476 or 479. (3 units; Spring)

Exploration of the methodologies for teaching non-performance music curricula in the classroom. Methodologies include Orff, Kodály, and Dalcroze, as well as learning theories for elementary-aged students, lesson plans, and the application of music and the arts in other disciplines. In addition to classroom instruction, students will complete observation hours of master teachers. Prerequisite: MUS 405. (3 units; Spring)

Survey of choral literature from a historical and educative perspective. Emphasis is placed on graded literature appropriate for use in secondary education. Prerequisite: MUS 405. (3 units; Spring)

Advanced development of the techniques of choral conducting. Course includes score analysis, verbal and non-verbal gestures, interpretative decisions, and development of choral tone. Practicum hours required. Prerequisite: MUS 312. Concurrent Requisite: MUS 093. (2 units; As offered)

The course encompasses proper diction for the Latin, Italian, and Spanish solo song and choral literature. Development of correct pronunciation methods through the use of language drills, listening to recordings, and reading of phonetic transcriptions of the texts in musical literature. Emphasis placed on program administration, rehearsal techniques, sight-reading, content standards, lesson planning, program building, classroom management and advocacy. Chamber Singers gives experience in preparation and performance of recognized and new choral works as well as masterworks of Western music written for small choral ensembles. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Survey of orchestral and band literature from a historical and educative perspective. Emphasis is placed on graded literature appropriate for use in secondary education. Prerequisite: MUS405. (3 units; Spring)

Advanced development of the specific skills and techniques of conducting instrumental ensembles, including orchestra and wind band. Course includes score analysis, interpretive decisions, baton technique, verbal and non-verbal communication, and development of a conductor's knowledge of relevant instruments and transpositions. Marching Band Techniques is designed for Music Education majors with an instrumental emphasis. The course provides an overview of the skills and knowledge needed to plan, organize, manage, and teach a high school marching band program. Topics to be covered include: music selection, show design, rehearsal planning, marching fundamentals and styles, instruments and equipment, budgets, travel planning, practices and policies, and philosophy. A six-month College Subscription of Pyware 3D drill design software is required. Prerequisite: MUS 124. (2 units; Fall even years)

Course is designed to teach the curricular foundations for future music educators teaching orchestra, band, and jazz in school settings. Emphasis placed on administration of instrumental programs, rehearsal techniques, content standards, lesson planning, program building, classroom management, and advocacy. Prerequisites: MUS345, and either 412 or 413. (3 units; Fall)

An inclusive concert band designed to provide instrumental experience and growth through rehearsal and public performance. Open to qualified students by audition or instructor's consent. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units. Additional uniform fee. Prerequisite: MUS 067 or 097. This course provides opportunities for preparation and performance of chamber music for strings including string quartets, trios, and more. Ensembles rehearse weekly with assigned faculty coaches and present performances of prepared music. The course is open to all music majors and to non-music majors by instructor permission. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units. Prerequisite: MUS 095. Concurrent Requisite: MUS 079, 086, or 466. (0-1 units; Fall/Spring)

The course is designed to provide musicians with the opportunity to explore chamber music involving the piano and other instruments. Various chamber ensembles may be formed including piano duets, trios, quartets, and quintets. Ensembles rehearse weekly, are provided coaching, and present performances of the music studied. The course is open to all music majors and to non-music majors by instructor permission. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of (12) units. The Guitar Ensemble studies and performs advanced music of different musical style periods and genres. Students will develop musical skills through weekly coaching, rehearsals, and performance. The ensemble is open to all music majors and to non-music majors by instructor permission. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units. The course is designed to provide musicians with the opportunity to explore chamber music written for various ensembles of wind instruments. Ensembles may include flute choir, clarinet choir, woodwind quintet, brass quintet, trombone choir, etc. Students will develop musical skills through weekly coaching, rehearsals, and performance. The ensemble is open to all music majors and to non-music majors by audition or instructor permission. Students must have sophomore status and prior experience to take Upper Division ensembles. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units. Jazz Combo provides musicians with opportunities to study and perform standard, traditional, and contemporary jazz literature for small ensemble, and to develop individual improvisational skills. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units.
