Students will be introduced to issues of diversity, oppression, human rights, and social justice.

Case Management/Assessment in Human Services

HMS 340

This course will emphasize community organizational theory and practice in human services, and community needs and assessment. In addition, students will be asked to develop change strategies and planning techniques to address deficits.

Crisis Intervention

HMS 420

Introduction to the theory and practice of crisis intervention including triage assessment, skill-building, cultural implications, and practical applications.

Student Learning Outcomes

Consistent with the university student outcomes, upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Human Services degree, graduates will be able to:

1. Effectively present information orally and in writing at the undergraduate level.
2. Describe the history of the helping relationship, intervention strategies within different settings, managed care and models of service delivery in human services.
3. Apply biopsychosocial theories, principles and concepts related to the human services field, profession, and society at large.
4. Evaluate quantitative and qualitative research methodology to the study of human services.
5. Evaluate issues related to diversity, human rights, families and social institutions.
6. Apply knowledge of ethical considerations, crisis management and community needs to assessment and intervention in human services.
7. Integrate Christian faith with biopsychosocial theories, concepts and principles in the human services field.

Dr. Deogratius Mshigeni

Associate Professor of Sociology, Program Coordinator for Human Services

I was born and raised in Tanzania’s busy Dar es Salaam business hub. I was exposed to a rich cultural heritage, diverse languages and many amazing natural landscapes in my formative years. My education journey took me to America, and I received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). I have 15+ years of experience as a front-end children’s social worker for investigative services and as a researcher focusing on child maltreatment, equity, diversity and inclusion, religion, social movements and globalization. Whenever I have free time, I like sketching, painting, running and playing basketball (although poorly in all).
