Lancer softball team hits home run for Roanoke City Mission
RIVERSIDE (May 23, 2012) -- The CBU Lancer softball team did more than win a championship when they traveled
to the 2012 NCCAA Softball National Championship in May. They began their visit by
donating time to community service in Roanoke, Va.
The women and their coaches worked on the Campbell House, a house just acquired by
Roanoke's City Mission to serve as a community center and transitional home for those
who need shelter. The team gutted two rooms in the house and removed a brick structure
in the living room that used to house a wood burning stove. They also tilled the Kid's
Garden, which will be used to teach children a skill and help provide food for their
families.
"These girls came ready to work and knocked out some walls, even though they had
practice the same day and four games the next morning," said Chelsea Charpia, who
works at the mission. "The coaches even got involved and cut down the overgrown shrubbery
in front of the house. Needless to say there were a lot of ‘runs' scored Wednesday
morning around the Campbell House," Charpia added.
The Lancers won the championship game against Campbellsville University 9-1.
