Grants
Dr. Robert LaChausse, professor of public health, received a DFC (Drug-Free Communities) grant by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the 10th consecutive year. The grant is for $125,000. The DFC program aims to mobilize community leaders to identify and respond to the drug problems unique to their community and change local community environmental conditions tied to substance use. LaChausse also Received a Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act grant for a second year from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for $49,945. This program aims to prevent and reduce alcohol use among youth and young adults ages 12-20 in communities throughout the United States.

A company-wide virtual training on Sept. 14 for CBEM, a crisis intervention agency that provides services to regional center consumers in all California counties.
Dr. Afarah Board, adjunct professor of business: The Phenomenon of Blacks Emerging Out of Poverty into Prominent Leadership Positions. ILA Global Conference online Oct. 4.
Dr. Melissa Croteau, professor of film studies: Oedipal Playing and Mirror Stages in Vinterberg’s The Celebration (1998). 2023 European Shakespeare Research Association Conference held at Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, Hungary, on July 6‒9.
Professional Accolades
Dr. Michelle Nielsen Hernandez, professor of mathematics, passed the Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics - Short Term actuarial examination (Exam FAM-S) on July 10.
Dr. Amanie Abdelmessih, professor of mechanical engineering, is a guest associate editor for the special issue Convective Heat-Mass Transport and Process Heat Exchanger, for the Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications. She will fill the role for one year.
Kristin Beinschroth, assistant professor of radiologic sciences, was named a semi-finalist for Most Effective Radiologic Sciences Educator in the 2023 Minnies. The Minnies, a campaign by AuntMinnie.com, recognize the best and brightest in medical imaging.
Dawn Carter, industry liaison for the School of Business, was named employee of the month for October. Her nomination included the following statements: “Dawn displays a strong engagement with community partners and maintains collaboration across CBU colleges and schools. Dawn facilitated partnership discussions with two Korean entities, which could lead to potential collaboration with marketing partners in Asia.”
Campus News
The Dr. Robert K. Jabs School of Business CBU Family Business Center partnered with the Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering to host the Manufacturer’s Council of the Inland Empire on Sept. 15 at CBU. Dr. Keanon Alderson, professor of business, presented on the challenges and solutions of owning a family business, and Dr. Philip van Haaster, dean of the College of Engineering, presented on engineering programs, followed by a tour of the engineering building.
Retired Lt. Col. Steve Russell spoke to aviation science students and faculty on Sept. 5-6. Russell, a former Army officer, state senator and U.S. representative for Oklahoma, was a key figure in the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003. He is now the president and CEO of JAARS, a mission aviation and support organization, and spoke about the challenges and rewards of being a missionary pilot.
Student Highlights
Keilah Diaz, a photography student, received first place editorial in the 2023 International Photography Awards. Chloe Heustis and Josiah Grant, photography students each received an Honorable Mention. Additionally, 17 other photographs by students were part of the Official Selection list. The awards are an annual competition for professional, amateur and student photographers. A jury of renowned photography experts judged 13,000 entries from 120 countries.
Personal Milestones
Brittany Soliz, accounts payable technician, and her husband, Carlos Hernandez, welcomed a son on Aug. 17. Israel Fidel Hernandez weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 19.5 inches.
