Grants
Dr. Robert LaChausse, professor of public health, received the Sober Truth on Preventing (STOP) Underage Drinking Act grant for the third year from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for $49,876. The program aims to prevent and reduce alcohol use among youth and young adults ages 12-20 in communities throughout the United States.
Dr. Jerri Middleton, assistant professor of social work, and Dr. Emelio Bermejo, assistant professor of social work, were awarded a $10,000 grant from the Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education. Their project will introduce CBU social work students to global issues of human trafficking and gender-based violence through participatory research methods that prioritize survivor voices and empowerment.
Dr. Mark Kim, associate professor of data science and computer science, was approved for a second year of funding for $859,000 through a federal subcontract with HII Mission Technologies Corp. The project focuses on designing and developing a data-driven decision support system for the Inland Empire Tech Bridge. The support system aims to accelerate innovation and technology commercialization in the Inland Empire and Southern California region.

Books
Dr. Ana M. Gamez, professor of psychology: co-wrote a chapter for Best Practices for the Reintegration of Offenders into the Community. The book is Building Trust, Effective Communication, and Transparency Between Police and Community Members. (IGI Global Publishing, 2024). She also wrote Overcoming Adversity: An Immigrants Perspective (2024). The book details the ins and outs of the adjustment process of immigrants in the United States of America.

Presentations
Dr. Humberto Gallegos, professor of civil engineering: Enhancing the GeoSpatial Engineering Curriculum at California Baptist University. Dr. Jiliang Li, assistant professor of civil engineering, contributed to the research. UESI Surveying and Geomatics Conference at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, on June 2-4.
Young Seop Lee, adjunct professor of architecture: a panelist on Telling Our Stories: Historic Preservation, Social Justice, and Educating the Community. Young Oak Kim Center’s Third Annual Korean American Studies Conference in Riverside on Sept. 21.
Dr. Mary Ann Pearson, professor of communication: Maintaining Work Life Balance for Mentors and Mentees. A virtual workshop for Sound Transit in Seattle on Sept. 19, which concluded a seven-session training program.
Dr. Jiliang Li, assistant professor of civil engineering: Engineering Surveying Different Labs Connections with Campus Landscape, Lectures and Upper‐Level Major Courses. Li conducted the research, and the presentation was given by Dr. Humberto Gallegos, professor of civil engineering, on Li's behalf. UESI Surveying and Geomatics Conference at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, on June 2-4.
Professional Accolades
Dr. Kendra Flores-Carter, associate professor of social work, was accepted to join the Advisory Council for the California Black Women's Health Project, which is dedicated to improving the health of California’s Black women and girls through advocacy, outreach, policy and education. Flores-Carter was also appointed as a member of the Council on Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Diversity, which is on the Council on Social Work Education, for a three-year term. The council initiates activities and programs related to ethnic minority groups in social work education and promotes research.
Daphne Kieling, international admissions counselor, was named employee of the month for October. Her nomination included the following statements: “Daphne goes above and beyond to serve her students’ unique needs. She is quick to assist, works hard behind the scenes to move students’ files quickly, and does all that she can to remove unnecessary barriers for a successful start to their student experience at CBU. She goes out of her way to build bridges with other departments and invites many to social activities in order to build more relationships across campus.”
