Dr. Trevor Gillum
Dr. Trevor Gillum, professor of kinesiology, has received a $123,700 subaward from the University of Montana to support research that tracks physiological responses to repeated heat stress. The study will combine real-world and lab-based testing to better understand how the body reacts to environmental and seasonal conditions. The data, along with advanced machine learning techniques, will be used to better predict heat illness and heat stroke in military populations.

Dr. Brian Bovee, associate professor of Computer Information Technology, and Dr. Benjamin Sanders, assistant professor of computing science and data science: Exploring Gamification and Generative AI to Drive Innovation in Healthcare. The paper was co-authored by Dr. James Zapata, assistant professor of physician assistant studies. Bovee also presented Enhancing Workplace Focus Through Digital Nudges and Flow State Training. Sanders presented a second paper, Developing Open Source Powerful Medical Decision Making Tools Over Threaded Hardware, to Promote Societal Sustainability – Phase I. Western Decision Sciences Institute Annual Conference in Honolulu on April 4.

The Marketing and Communication division earned four awards, including a grand prize, at the Baptist Communicators Association’s Wilmer C. Fields Awards on April 22. Arthur S. Davenport Award for Exceptional Achievement in Public Relations & Development: A CBU Christmas 2024; Public Relations or Development Campaign: 1st place - Best Kept Secret No More; PR for Special Events: 1st place - A CBU Christmas 2024; Communications and/or Marketing Strategy: 2nd place - CBU Military Marketing Campaign.

California Baptist University will fly the American flag at half-staff on May 5 for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend and on May 15 for Peace Officers Memorial Day.

CBU photography students Josiah Grant and Arier Randolph were selected for the American Photography 41 winning collection. From over 7,000 entries, the jury selected 370 images to appear in the book. Additionally, images by CBU students Emma Osborn, Juliette Doan and Eileen Solorzano were among the 460 images chosen to appear online.
American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter
CBU’s American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter participated in the Pacific SouthWest Symposium at Cal Poly Pomona on April 2-5. Thirty-one CBU students competed against 13 other schools in various technical and non-technical events, including steel bridge, concrete canoe, surveying, environmental engineering and sports competitions. The CBU team placed third in aesthetics for the steel bridge competition.
