Dr. John Marselus, professor of aviation science, completed ordination with the Christian Missionary Alliance in May. He volunteers as lay pastor at The Grove Community Church. He is also licensed in the Southern Baptist Church.

CBU Campus

University Advancement is pleased to announce that California Baptist University received $1.3 million in new estate gift commitments in March. An alumnus who attended the university when it was still California Baptist College has committed $300,000 to CBU's general endowment for its ongoing support. A generous friend of CBU has committed $500,000 to create an endowed scholarship to assist 5th-year architecture students. A husband and wife (friends of CBU) have committed $250,000 for a new endowed scholarship to support aviation flight students with a concentration in Mission Aviation and at least a minor in Christian Studies. The same couple has also committed $250,000 to CBU's Paul & Annie Kienel Leadership Institute.

The Career Center, in partnership with the Division of Social Work, presented an etiquette dinner for its distance learning residency on April 21. The goal was to create an atmosphere of networking and cultivate individual confidence. Lisa Singer, director of the Career Center, and Pablo Hildalgo, career counselor, led the session, titled Breaking Bread While Breaking Barriers.

ASCE Students

CBU ASCE students

CBU’s American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter participated in the Pacific SouthWest Symposium at California State University, Northridge on March 23-25. A total of 36 CBU students competed against 14 other schools in numerous events including steel bridge, concrete canoe and sports competitions. CBU team earned first place in technical paper, basketball and Kan Jam (a frisbee game).

Spring Show

2023 Spring Show

The Graphic Design and Photography programs welcomed over 500 guests to the VIP reception for the 2023 Spring Show on April 22. That day alumni participated in a panel discussion, and industry professionals spoke. Additionally, seniors presented their portfolios and capstone projects. More than 50 students — 31 photography and 23 graphic design and visual experience students — had their work featured.

Ammar Ansari

Ammar Ansari, in the Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology program, participated in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychologists (SIOP) Machine Learning competition this year. Teams competed against fellow graduate students as well as academics and industry professionals to predict text responses. Ansari received second place. His solution utilized Python and R libraries for converting text to numerical vectors. As one of the top four submissions, he presented his solution at the SIOP conference in Boston on April 20.

Pi Sigma Alpha

Pi Sigma Alpha, which is the National Political Science Honor Society, inducted new members. To be eligible for membership in Pi Sigma Alpha students must meet high academic standards, such as a 3.5 overall GPA. The students inducted were Sara Munoz, Jefferson Randolph, Dalen James, Maritza Huerta, Yasna Petrova, Carol Saad, Cynthia Esparza, Gabriel Gonzalez, Crystal Mendoza, Joshua Wilson, Daniel Harris and McKenna Strosser. Cynthia Warren (Morris, 2019 inductee), who will be the legislative grant analyst in the Department of Behavioral Health for San Bernardino County, gave a presentation at the induction ceremony on April 18. Dr. Chris McHorney, professor of political science, and Dr. Chase Porter, assistant professor of political science, are the faculty advisors.

 

2023 Air Show

Aviation science had three aircraft on display at the 2023 So Cal Air Show at the March Air Reserve Base on April 22-23. More than 20 students, faculty and staff represented Admissions, the Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering and the Department of Aviation Science.

Sean Langevin, administrative secretary for Arts and Letters, and his wife, Amanda, welcomed a son on April 18. Caleb Sean Langevin weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 14.5 inches.

Emberlynn

Emberlynn Charis Liardon

McKenna Liardon, associate director of Residence Life, and her husband, Ian, welcomed a daughter on March 6. Emberlynn Charis Liardon weighed 9 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 21 inches.
