Dr. Jin-Sil Mock, assistant professor of education, and Dr. Stacy Meyer, assistant professor of education: received $249,999 from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The funding will help create a new four-year integrated pathway for earning single/multiple subject credentials with bilingual education credentials.

Professional Accolades
Allie Floyd, director of academic operations for Natural and Mathematics Sciences, was named employee of the month for May. Her nomination form included the following statements: “Allie is always here and on time! We can always count on her! She does her job exceedingly well by being accurate, thorough, and reliable. Allie encourages others, has a can-do attitude, a servant’s heart, and a big smile. She is a phenomenal representative of our department, CBU and Jesus.”
Dr. Terri Thompson, associate professor of nursing: received the Daisy Award Honoree for nursing excellence from Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. A patient’s family member who was cared for by Thompson, on the Labor and Delivery unit, submitted the nomination. This is her second Daisy Award. The first was in 2015, where she received the first faculty Daisy Award Honoree for nursing excellence, at CBU.
Josselyn Hernandez, clinical coordinator for the School of Education, was named employee of the month for June. Her nomination form included the following statements: “Josselyn has a positive relationship with all SOE staff, faculty, and students. She is an encourager and is always willing to lend a hand to others. Josselyn regularly asserts a positive, can-do attitude that keeps the SOE staff and events professional and efficient.”
Making an Impact
Dawn Carter, industry liaison for the School of Business: presented to the Riverside City Council on April 11 regarding a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Riverside and the Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho Foundation of the Americas, which proposed an educational center in Riverside for Korean Independence activist Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho. He lived in Riverside in the early 1900s and is a respected figure in Korean history. Carter is the co-chair of the Gangnam Sister City committee for Riverside as part of the International Relations Council of Riverside. She was featured in a Press-Enterprise story about the center and the Riverside mayor’s trade mission to Seoul, South Korea. She recently traveled with the mayor to South Korea as part of a trade mission.
Dr. Ana Gamez, professor of psychology, is an advisory board member for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers). She served as a panelist for PowerTalk21, dedicated to intentional and ongoing conversations between parents and children about alcohol on April 22. The event was to create a space for parents/guardians and teens to have conversations and hear from others about their experiences in preventing underage drinking and substance use.
Campus News
California Baptist University Bell Tower Society members gathered for the 2023 Evening of Thanks on May 16. The dinner is an annual event to honor the generosity of CBU donors. Donors heard from three CBU student scholarship recipients -- Ethan Padilla (’24), Luke De Los Reyes (’25) and Tori Hitchcock (’25). Dr. Ronald L. Ellis, president of the university, provided a university update and praised the remarkable year of giving that CBU has been blessed with this past year. The university has received $44.1 million, including a historic $28.5 million gift from Dale and Ann Fowler. Because of this generosity, CBU students will feel the impact of these gifts for generations to come.
The CBU Bell Tower Society was established in 2014. The bell tower and cross stand as an iconic symbol of CBU, and the Bell Tower Society symbolizes CBU’s commitment to recognizing and honoring some of its most generous supporters. The gifts support the students through scholarships, the development of premier academic programs, the construction of strategic campus facilities and the recruitment and retention of esteemed faculty. CBU was designated 2023-2024 Military Friendly School with the gold designation. Over 1,800 institutions were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a propriety survey. CBU is one of the 250 schools nationwide selected for “Gold” award status for leading practices, outcomes and effective programs.
Student Highlights
Dr. Ed Garrett, professor of sport and performance psychology, and Dr. Sydney Leisz, assistant professor of kinesiology, took 20 students to London on April 29-May 7 to study international sport performance. The trip included visiting British professional football clubs, Olympic Park, Lords Cricket ground and Wimbledon.
Eleven architecture students had projects exhibited in Riverside City Hall for the visit of the mayor and delegates from Gangnam, South Korea, on May 15.
The Veterans Resource Center held its first Veterans and Military Dependent Graduation Recognition Ceremony on April 14. The Graduation Recognition Ceremony celebrated the academic accomplishments of about 20 active-duty military, military veterans, military spouses and dependents.
The CBU Student Film Festival was held on April 22 at the Ramona High School Auditorium, in conjunction with the Riverside International Film Festival and the new Inland Empire Student Film Festival. Fourteen short films were accepted into the CBU Student Film Festival. A grant was received from the Carpenter Foundation in 2022, allowing the CBU Student Film Festival to expand, including short films from high school students and college and university students in the region. Award winners included Unapparent Apparitions (dir. Jessica Donald) for Best Picture, and Blake Rice received the Best Director Award Little Thieves.
