Grants
Dr. Matthew Niermann, associate professor of architecture, has been awarded a Templeton Religion Trust research grant for $1,001,706. The title of his research is Spiritual Understanding and Architecture: A Multi-method, Empirical Investigation Across Religious and Non-religious Populations. The interdisciplinary study uses a novel empirical methodology and biometric tools to explore how sacred architecture communicates spiritual information to both religious and non-religious populations.
Dr. Angela Coaston, associate professor of nursing, has been awarded a $121,613 grant from Riverside University Health System – Public Health. The project aims to empower communities by enhancing their capacity to combat COVID-19 transmission among high-risk populations and those underserved by the current testing system.

The book delves into the biblical foundations of health, historical perspectives of Christian medical missions, and strategies for integrating faith with modern healthcare.

Sonya Singh, instructor of journalism, was featured in The New York Times’ California Today newsletter under “And before you go, some good news” on June 12. The article, Adults doubted us. We found a way to shrink emissions at our middle school anyway, was first published in The Guardian on June 10.

Dr. John Marselus, professor of aviation science: keynote speaker for the Alaska Ministry Aviation Conference. Marselus spoke on flight safety, partnership in the Gospel and several aerodynamic topics of interest to Alaskan aviation. The conference was hosted by Missionary Aviation Repair Center in Soldotna, Alaska, on May 9-10.
Dr. Erin Smith, professor of psychology: workshop Mapping Your Research Agenda and panelist on Interdisciplinary Team Science. Training seminar as part of Baylor University’s Illuminate Theological Inquiry and Christian Ethics Through Training in Psychological Science Initiative in Salado, Texas, on May 14-15.
Dr. Thomas Schneider, professor of English: Irresistible Motion in Middle English Metrical Romance and Merlin Roundtable. International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on May 9-11.
Dr. H. Bruce Stokes, professor of anthropology and Christian behavioral science, taught a four-week Panim El Panim (Face to Face) course for the Messianic Jewish Theological Institute in April. The course, What About the Strangers Among Us, addressed the challenges faced by Messianic Jewish congregations attempting to engage Gentile believers in their midst.
Dr. Amanie Abdelmessih, professor of mechanical engineering: Who is Biased? Them? Us? Or All? The 2024 SWE OC Professional Development Conference at the University of California, Irvine, on May 19. She received a certificate of presentation for excellent presentation at the conference and significant contribution to the success of the conference.
Dr. Ed Garrett, professor of sport and performance psychology: Invoking Change by Empowering Minds: Mindful tools and application to motivate and overcome. The 2024 National Innovative Communities Conference in Riverside on June 12.
Dr. Melissa Croteau, professor of film studies: Weathering Trauma in Makoto Shinkai’s Post-3.11 World: Japanese Environmental Philosophy in the Blockbuster Weathering With You (2019). The 12th East-West Philosophers’ Conference in Honolulu on May 24-31.
Alma Salazar, director of graduate admissions: co-presented What Graduate Students Want, How Graduate Enrollment Should Respond. North American Coalition for Admission Professional conference in Santa Barbara, California, on June 3-5.

Dr. Shawn Wilhite, associate professor of New Testament, was interviewed on the Patristica Podcast, a podcast about early Christianity. The title was The Didache (May 30).
Professional Accolades
Rob Thayer, graduate admissions counselor/recruiter, was awarded Graduate Admissions Rookie of the Year at the North American Coalition for Admission Professionals Annual Conference in Santa Barbara, California, on June 3-5. He was recognized for his outstanding collaboration and execution of enrollment goals and his ability to forge relationships with students, faculty and staff.
Marketing and Communication division earned several recognitions at the Baptist Communicators Association’s Wilmer C. Fields Awards on April 24. Public Relations or Development Campaign: 1st place – A CBU Christmas Campaign; 3rd place – Historic Gifts Campaign. Student Highlights
The Global Social Service Practicum class of 13 undergraduate students traveled to New Zealand on May 5-19 for a cultural immersion in the Māori culture and explored the environmental ecosystems of the islands. The group visited nonprofit organizations serving the Māori people, watched traditional ritual performances and heard information regarding the history of the Māori. Exploring the environmental ecosystems included hikes and a dolphin encounter swim in Kaikoura Bay, where the team saw volcanic craters, hot water springs, rare plant life and an array of New Zealand’s most endangered animals and birds.
Personal Milestones
David Little, associate director of graduate admissions, and his wife, Jolene, welcomed a daughter on May 5. Jillian Taylor Little weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 21.5 inches. She joins siblings Arayah, 7, Wesley, 3, and Laila, 2.
Kristeen Farlow, senior director of communications and public relations, welcomed a daughter on April 23. Magnolia Anne weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19 inches. She joins sister Hope, 8.
