Dr. Noel Cooper, assistant professor of psychology: received $3,000 from the Riverside County Community Improvement Designation Fund. This funding will help defray costs for low-income clients at CBU’s Psychological Services of Riverside.

Dr. Jim Buchholz, professor of mathematics and physics: interviewed for The Debrief Podcast from Pastor Matt Brown of Sandals Church. The title was Science and Faith (Episode 204).
Professional Accolades
Dr. Melissa Anozie, assistant professor of nursing: earned the Certified Nurse Educator certification from the National League for Nursing.
Alma Salazar, director of graduate admissions, received the Graduate & Adult Professional of the Year award from the North American Coalition for Christian Admission Professionals for her “effort toward advancing enrollment in Christian Higher Education.” She was selected from over 300 applicants. The annual conference was at Southern Charleston University on May 23.
Keelan Kaiser, professor of architecture, received an honorable mention award from the USGBC East North Central Region for an office building he designed. The project is distinctive in its extremely low carbon intensity, significant energy production which transfers extra energy to offset existing high carbon buildings on the rest of the campus, stormwater capture that supports all irrigation and non-potable water needs, integration with nature, and quality of end user workplace experience.
Sam Anich, student success coach I, was named employee of the month for July. His nomination form included the following statements: “Samuel is a highly valued member of the academic advising/student success coaching team. He can be counted on to put forth his best effort each and every day. He is an independent problem solver and makes every effort to gather information independently and work to find solutions that best serve CBU students and the University.”
Dr. George Vigil, adjunct professor of business, received a Doctor of Philosophy in Global Leadership from Pepperdine University on May 20. His dissertation was titled Generational Advancement in Sovereign Nations: A Qualitative Study Understanding The Significance of Knowledge Infrastructure.
Dr. Frederick Naff, adjunct professor of architecture, received a doctorate in architecture from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He defended his dissertation, The Bay Region School and the Discourse on the Mediterranean, on June 14.
James Curtis, adjunct professor of public administration, earned a Master of Social Work and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Loma Linda University on June 11.
Dr. Amanda Fierro, adjunct professor of English, received a Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Administration from CBU. She defended her dissertation, A qualitative study of minority higher education faculty's experiences with equity, diversity, and inclusion within their institutions, on June 19.
Dr. John Marselus, professor of aviation science, was recognized by the Society of Extraordinary Women for his contributions to the society. Ignite Leadership Academy & STEM Academy were held at the CBU airport campus. Aimed at girls 11 to 15 years of age, the goal is to encourage young women to consider careers in STEM. Shirley Coates, president/CEO of the Society of Extraordinary Women, made the presentation.
The Office of the University Registrar received an award from College Source, a software company for higher education, at the College Source Annual Conference in San Diego on June 25-28. The office received the award for Innovation in Advancing Transfer Student Success.
Making an Impact
Dr. Victoria Brodie, associate professor of public relations, was appointed by Riverside City Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson to serve on the Riverside Park and Recreation Commission in a citywide seat. The commission acts in an advisory capacity to the mayor and City Council in all matters pertaining to parks, recreation and parkways.
Campus News
The Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Performing Arts held music camps for jazz, band and strings this summer. Each held a concert at the end of the week. A total of 180 students attended.
Student Highlights
Eight architecture students spent two weeks in Greece. They took a class taught by Dr. Frederick Naff, adjunct professor of architecture. They designed projects for a ministry center. They also learned about modern Greek architecture, toured Athens architecture and visited Ancient Corinth. The students were: Audrey Littoral, JohnJoe Lopez, Nathanael Gorelik, McLane Mares, Hunter Osborne, Sarah Schober, Nathaniel Fister and Andrea Martinez.
Keiren Wright (’23) and Pablo Leiva (’22) placed as finalists in the annual international Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition. Their analysis projects are part of a graduate elective advanced drawing class. The competition has averaged over 400 entries from 25 countries in the past several years. The finalists represent the top 25% of entries in the competition.
Student Highlights
Dr. Charles Sands, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed their second grandchild on June 12. Ivy James Morris weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 19 inches. Her parents are Kendall (’18, ’22) and Amber Leigh Morris (’19).
Stephen Bautista, adjunct professor of illustration, and his wife, Nicole, welcomed a son on Feb. 12. Ryder Joel Zeppelin Bautista weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 20 inches. He joins sisters Emma, Ashlyn and Lauryn.
