Joel Balzun, adjunct professor of music, made his debut with the Los Angeles Opera as the Sergeant in The Barber of Seville, conducted by Louis Lohraseb and directed by Rob Ashford on Oct. 21-Nov. 12. Additionally, he was a finalist in the Vincerò World Opera Competition, held in Verona, Italy, in December.

Jacob Singhavong, a Master’s in Social Work student, published a book, Sticky Rice for Lunch (Dec. 2).

Award

Humility and Grit Community Appreciation Award

Zackary Littman and Ken Schemmer, MS sport and performance psychology students, received the Humility and Grit Community Appreciation Award on Dec. 15 from the Riverside Police Department for their work as interns with the department’s Explorers Program in 2023. The Explorers engaged in several mental skills workshops designed by CBU’s sport and performance students that touched on topics such as self-confidence, team communication, understanding body language, leadership, and mindfulness. Other interns with the Explorers were Teresa Garcia, Matthew Mascio, Elizabeth Knof and Heather Humes.
