John Freese, director of Safety Services, was named employee of the month for December. His nomination included the following statements: “John consistently demonstrates performance above expected levels. He effectively blends professionalism, caring, and compassion to members of the campus community. He also routinely takes time to listen to and pray for his staff, provide assistance to individuals who demonstrate a need, and share his faith through words and actions.”

Matthew Pitts, adjunct professor of music, won the inaugural scholastic award from the Center for Classical Theology. His essay was published the Journal of Classical Theology (November 2023). It is titled Whether the Beatific Vision Will be Experienced Bodily by the Saints?

Dr. Effat Zeidan Hatoum

Dr. Effat Zeidan Hatoum, associate professor of natural and mathematical sciences, was selected as a recipient of the 2023 Interactive Science Educators Award. The award is from Interactive Science.

California Baptist University had representatives at the inaugural STEPCon Counselor Conference for school counselors at Bourns Inc. in Riverside on Nov. 8. Presenters included Dr. Phil van Haaster, dean of the Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering, Dr. Dan Grissom, professor of computer science, Dr. Jay Lee, professor of construction management, Kelsie Byrd, assistant professor of nursing, and Dr. Bruce Prins, professor of biology. Kaylee Garcia, a CBU mechanical engineering graduate of 2020, was the keynote speaker. Jenna Olechnowicz, a nursing student, and Hannah Thompson, an engineering student, participated in a panel discussion.

Dr. Amanie Abdelmessih

Dr. Amanie Abdelmessih, professor of mechanical engineering, served as track co-organizer in heterogeneous integrated systems for the 2023 ASME InterPACK Conference in San Diego on Oct. 24-26. The American Institute of Mechanical Engineers gave her a certificate of appreciation for her services.

Dr. John Marselus

Dr. John Marselus, professor of aviation science, led the Missionary Aviation Leadership Summit at Nampa, Idaho, on Nov. 28-29. Mission Aviation Fellowship US is the largest missionary aviation organization in the world. During the summit, the group discussed issues pertaining to missionary aviation worldwide.

Dr. Christopher Kern

Christopher Kern, associate professor of photography, mentored six photographers, age 18-30, through an American Society of Media Photographers program from July 11-Nov. 18. CBU photography students supported the Bridge LA Mentoring Program in various ways, including the printing and installing of the final show on Nov. 18 in Los Angeles at Naked Eye Studio. Over 100 works were installed, presented and removed for a one-night show, which CBU Photography helped facilitate. 

 

Arbor Day

Environmental Science Club and Botany Club

The CBU Biological Sciences Department, Environmental Science Club and Botany Club held an annual Arbor Day event in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation as a certified Tree Campus USA. Dr. Bonjun Koo, professor of environmental science, supervised the event. Nearly 160 people participated. On Dec. 1, students joined the Urban Agriculture Lab, taught by Dr. Jacob Lanphere, professor of environmental science, at Lancer Farm and Gardens to plant three trees. On Dec. 2, students Cynthiana Rangel, Jacob Trinidad Kelsey Bechler, Kylie Williams and Eric Luera led teams to plant additional trees and pick up trash on campus and along Monroe Street and Diana Avenue.

Kristin Beinschroth

Kristin Beinschroth, assistant professor of radiologic sciences, hosted the California Society of Radiologic Technologists annual conference at the College of Health Science on Nov. 4-5. She is the vice president of the group. About 90 people attended, and nearly 20 CBU students served as volunteers. Elizabeth Kerns, adjunct professor of mammography, lectured on Navigating the OR: Tips, Tricks and Strategies for a Safe and Smooth Case.

CBU Cardiac Engineering Team

The CBU Cardiac Engineering team took third place at the first artificial heart competition, Heart Hackathon, in Dallas on Oct. 29.  Six CBU biomedical engineering students competed: Ryan Krippner, Gavin Boone, Joshua Lute, Grace Santrach, Silas Sheffer and Karoline Greenwood.

Dr. John Marselus, professor of aviation science, took his aerodynamics students to the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino on Dec. 2. Lisa Collinsworth, CBU alumni and daughter of the Collinsworth family whom the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of the Performing Arts is named after, sponsored the visit.

Dr. Brittany Lytle-Rodriguez, assistant professor of social work, and her husband, Erik, welcomed a son on Aug. 1. Sebastian Rodriguez weighed 7 pounds, 1.9 ounces and measured 20.47 inches. He joins Elijah, 9.
