Coming from the perspective of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework, my major interests are in assessment and treatment of persons with acquired neurogenic communication disorders, and ways to offer programming at the community level for persons with aphasia and dysarthria in the context of shrinking healthcare resources. My research and writing interests are in the areas of group therapy, social networks after the onset of aphasia, partner training of significant others of persons with aphasia, and outcomes measurement in aphasia. I am also very passionate about working with persons with motor speech disorders.

2008 Principal Investigator, Social networks after the onset of aphasia, a research project with IRB approval from St. Jude Medical Center, California State University, Fullerton, and Claremont Graduate University, 2007-2008. This work measured the social networks and social participation/isolation of 40 individuals with aphasia. Completed in April, 2008.

2005 Principal Investigator, Social Networks of persons with aphasia: Do SLPs measure them? A research project with IRB approval from Claremont Graduate University in 2005. This research involved a statewide survey of speech language pathologists regarding assessment of social networks of persons with aphasia. Completed in April, 2005.

2003 Principal Investigator, Measuring changes in participation associated with attending an aphasia group, a research project with IRB approval from St. Jude Medical Center and California State University, Fullerton, 2001-2003. This work studied the effects of group aphasia therapy for 8 members of Communication Recovery at St. Jude Medical Center. Completed in May, 2003.

My husband Terry and I have four wonderful young adult children, Davis, Sara, Michael and Tim. We share our home with our American Lab “Bob” and "Caprica" an adopted hound from Texas. We enjoy visiting Crystal Cove in Newport Beach and love to travel to the central coast, including Cambria and Morro Bay as well as Point Reyes Seashore, and the Eastern Sierras where we love to hike, take pictures, swim and float in both June and Mono Lakes.

Philosophy of education:
I believe that in higher education we have the ability to bring positive change to the world as part of being the light that Christ calls us to be. This light is shared by our demeanor, our words, and our actions in daily life, and the arena of higher education is definitely an important place where the beauty of Christ can be displayed by one of His servants. I believe strongly that each student as well as each client I work with is a person who God brought across my path. The people we serve in our work as speech language pathologists are often hurting and in crisis, both clients and their families. I call upon God’s strength in doing this work and I share this with students.
