Philosophy of Education

To be asked to delineate your teaching philosophy one must understand the importance of education. Man has been expanding his quest for knowledge and understanding since the beginning of time. Education has played a major role in expanding such knowledge by providing the stimulation to discover, acquire, and learn the new skills needed in a rapidly changing world. Today, there is little that remains dormant, constant, or fixed in application and becoming a knowledge worker is important for success in our society today.

Education has always given direction and motivation to students plus the opportunities to allow them to reach their maximum academic and creative abilities in accordance with their needs and interest. Maximum educational growth for an individual comes when everyone is able to recognize that each person is an individual and when a teacher provides the best opportunity to identify and develop one’s capabilities to their fullest degree, the final result often produces positive results.

Therefore, I see the duty of the educator as, appropriately, one where the concept of encouraging, inspiring and motivating individuals to reach their maximum growth is prevalent. Educators must recognize that individuals not only learn at different rates, but also for different reasons. I believe that the educator needs to take a fair and balanced approach in order to help individuals grow and become responsible, self-disciplined, and balanced citizens, respecting not only their own values, but able to demonstrate respect for others whose have differing backgrounds, cultures, and values.

The educational system must provide room for individual differences; an enhanced learning environment; and an environment that will foster experiences so that students will have a passion to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, ideals, understanding, and the appreciation necessary for their successful participation in a multi-ethnic, democratic society. The total individual, both the mind and the body, must be developed in order to accomplish this goal.

As an educator, my philosophy is to always exhibit a high degree of integrity while consistently thinking of ways to improve the way teaching and motivating is done. I fully understand that teaching is hard work with a committed lifestyle of dedication.

I know that I must also pursue educational curriculum that consists of a variety of experiences that any individual under the educational system can understand. Also, the curriculum must be highly effective and continuously planned where it is modified in order to provide the maximum growth to the students. The curriculum must be re-evaluated and modified on a regular basis in order to meet the current needs and interests of both the individual student and society.

Lastly, my philosophy regarding any course I teach is to create or allow an environment where students are able to think with clarity whether the student’s position is similar to my own or even radically different. Any student who learns to think will be successful in life as well as in any course I teach and they will leave with something that they can use in their lives forever. Furthermore, it is my goal to teach students how to think and learn a subject and not just memorize a subject.
