New Student Orientation & Welcome Weekend FAQs
What's the difference?
New Student Orientation is a mandatory, one-day, on-campus event occurring multiple times between May-July. New students need to attend only 1 orientation during the summer. One orientation event occurs in September for those that cannot attend a May-July event.
Welcome Weekend is a large, one-time, multiple-day event for all new students beginning a few days before the semester starts.
New Student Orientation FAQs
When is Orientation? Several identical Orientation events will be hosted on campus between May 15th - July 31st, 2017. There are 6 identical events designed for first-time freshman. There are 4 identical events designed for transfer students. One event is scheduled for August 31st for anyone unable to attend a summer event.
Do I need to register for Orientation? Yes, you will need to register. Online registration will open on April 15th, 2016.
Who should attend Orientation? All new students (freshmen and transfers) who live within a 4 hour drive of CBU are expected to attend Orientation. Upon signing up for Orientation, our Academic Advising office will collaborate with you to build your first-semester class schedule. Orientation attendance is mandatory in order to finalize your class schedule.
If you live further than a 4 hour drive from CBU, you are not required to drive/fly to campus. You are eligible to finalize your class schedule without making the trip over the summer. You will attend an Orientation event in September which occurs the day before Welcome Weekend. We will notify you via email regarding that process.
Should my parent or guest attend Orientation? Yes, there will be special programming just for parents and guests where they will receive important information. Plus, CBU will cover the cost for lunch for up to 2 parents/guests that day. Here is a list of hotels that may offer CBU guest rates for those that need to spend the night in Riverside.

Will university offices be open during Orientation? Yes! There will be time to meet with different offices; we also will bring the offices to you through different information sessions throughout the event. It is our hope that you would leave Orientation with all your questions answered. Each of the University offices will be open normal business hours during Orientation.
What academic information will I receive at Orientation? Students will hear from professors from their department who will explain how students can best prepare and be successful in their major.
How will I get my classes? During Orientation, you will be given your class schedule and trained by the Academic Advising staff in how to navigate the online class registration system.
If I have question about making financial arrangements what should I do? We will cover general Financial Aid information at Orientation. Welcome Weekend FAQs
When is Welcome Weekend? September 1-4, 2017
Do I need to register for Welcome Weekend? Yes, an online registration form will be available soon.
Who should attend Welcome Weekend? All new students should attend Welcome Weekend. This is when you will: move on campus (residential students), learn in depth about CBU resources and how to succeed academically, socially and spiritually. There is an emphasis on connecting to CBU's campus and community, as well as connect to Christ.
Should my parents or guest attend Welcome Weekend? Most parent and guest programming will occur during New Student Orientation, so there won't be much for parents and guests during Welcome Weekend. The emphasis of Welcome Weekend is to connect new CBU students to the university and each other. Check the Welcome Weekend webpage for a highlights schedule to plan your parent's or guest's involvement.
When do classes begin? The Fall 2017 semester begins on September 5, 2017.
Where can I buy books for my classes? Textbooks can be purchased at the Campus Store, located on campus in Lancer Plaza. The Campus Store will be open throughout Welcome Weekend. For more information about Textbooks visit the Campus Store site.
Are first-year students allowed to have vehicles on campus? Yes, all students are allowed to have vehicles on campus. However, you must obtain a parking permit for each vehicle that you will use. There is no charge for parking permits. To register your vehicle, click here.
When can I move onto campus? Move-in day is, Friday September 1, the first day of "Welcome Weekend."
What will I need to bring to my dorm/apartment? Residence Life has provided a list of things to bring here.
What is an RA? RA stands for Resident Advisor. RA’s are upperclassmen students who are trained to help facilitate meaningful community relationships among students living on campus. If a housing-related issue arises, including maintenance, lock-outs, etc., the RA is the student’s first point of contact. Each living area is staffed by several RA’s.
What is an RD? RD stands for Residence Director. RD’s are full time staff members that live in each of the living areas on campus. They are in charge of maintaining the living areas, facilitating community, and maintaining student conduct. They also oversee the RA’s in each living area.
Is there free WiFi on campus? Yes! It can be accessed almost anywhere on campus. No password is required.

What is the nearest airport to CBU? The closest airport to the University is Ontario International Airport (ONT). There are many other airports in driving distance as well including: LAX, John Wayne Airport (SNA), Long Beach Airport (LGB).
