The curriculum is taught by expert instructors and will prepare graduates to enter a variety of careers in a college or university setting as administrators, department specialists, academic advisors or other leadership roles. Students will be challenged to approach higher education leadership from a multicultural perspective in order to create a comprehensive philosophy of student development.

Experience hands-on learning

Small class sizes and personal interaction with experienced educators equip candidates with the necessary skills to assume formal and informal leadership roles in higher education. The program curriculum bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world application. Candidates will gain practical experience through meaningful fieldwork and relevant courses.

What You'll Learn

Mission: To prepare candidates to serve in various leadership roles across an institution of higher education by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to integrate a personal philosophy of leadership and college student development with practical outcomes.

To prepare candidate for these leadership roles, they will need to:

  1.  Integrate theories and principles of leadership that align with a personal worldview and philosophical approach to higher education.  
  2. Demonstrate effective communication strategies to accomplish the goals within the organization.
  3. Apply models of multicultural competence to meet the needs of institutions with increasingly diverse populations.
  4. Implement human development theories in higher education programs and practices.
  5. Develop a framework for ethical decision making, which accounts for personal commitments and institutional values.
  6. Utilize research-based best practices for program development and decision-making.

Program Details

HED 510: Student Development in Higher Education

An evaluation of developmental theories and issues as applied to college students from late adolescence to adulthood. 

HED 530: Introduction to College Counseling and Advising

This course equips students to help both individuals and groups through difficult transitions. 

HED 560: Program Development and Assessment

This course examines the issues and models associated with developing and implementing comprehensive and holistic assessments of academic and social programs and institutions.
