A unique dual degree program is available to students who wish to have both the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology and the Master of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology.

Do you have some background in psychology and want to become a counselor with a specialization in sport and performance psychology? 

The MS in Counseling Psychology program aligns with the degree and coursework requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in the state of California and, when adding the optional coursework, as a Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC).

The MS in Sport and Performance Psychology meets the Association for Applied Sport Psychology's requirements for certified mental performance consultants and offers internship opportunities for students to obtain their mentored hours and to gain certification as mental performance consultants.

Program Details

SPP 510: Advanced Sport and Performance Psychology

This course provides an in-depth application of psychological concepts to sport and performance. Emphasis is placed on issues of motivation, emotion, associative learning, imagery, spirituality and arousal regulation in regards to their influence on athletic performance and goal achievement. 

PSY 500: Diversity Issues in Counseling Psychology

Examination of the effects of therapeutic interventions on culturally distinct populations.

PSY 590: Christian Perspective on Professional Counseling

Faculty and student dialog on issues and topics related to the integration of Christianity and psychology.

  1. Admission to Treatment: Identify systemic clinical concerns based on both client presentations as well as consider issues like trauma, crises, and substance abuse as motivators to begin marriage and family therapy treatment.  
  2. Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis: Utilize a relational understanding of psychopathalogical and incorporate relational assessment to develop an accurate diagnostic framework upon which to base marriage and family therapy treatment.
  3. Treatment Planning & Case Management: Develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to address client concerns as well as incorporate clinical assessment and diagnosis in marriage and family therapy treatment.
  4. Interventions: Evaluate a variety of foundational and contemporary family theories and therapy models and interventions. 
  5. Legal and Ethical Issues and Standards: Apply current laws and ethical issues affecting marriage and family therapists.
  6. Research and Program Evaluation: Apply knowledge of research, evidence-based treatments, and basic strategies for evaluating research relevant to the practice of marriage and family therapy.
  7. Christian Faith Integration: Apply worldview framework and its application to the practice of marriage and family therapy.
  8. Counselor Preparation: Integrate foundational and contemporary models of counseling into treatment plans and case conceptualization.
SLOs for Sport and Performance Psychology, MS
  1. Graduating students will have a firm understanding of the cognitive, biological, and social processes related to performance.
  2. Graduating students will have knowledge of the psychological techniques and consulting skills used to improve performance and overcome personal barriers.
  3. Graduating students will have the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of clients due to their firm understanding of ethical issues pertaining to the field and the best practices to handle these issues.
  4. Students will understand how to interpret, critique, and conduct research in the field of sport, exercise, and performance psychology.
  5. Students will understand how to view and apply concepts in sports and performance psychology through a Christian lens.
