The course material will focus on the rudiments of piano playing, including acquisition of the Technical Skills (Items 1-10) of Piano Proficiency (i.e. scales, arpeggios, and chords). Introduction to theories, fundamentals, and practices of entrepreneurship and small business as applied to musicians. Music majors in the Performance or Composition for Stage and Screen degree programs present a concert or half recital of 20-30 minutes during their junior year. Students will perform selections from their Junior Recital repertoire in this class setting, and will receive constructive critique from the instructor and classmates. Students must successfully complete the Applied Music Proficiency and Piano Proficiency in order to enroll in this course. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Applie Music Proficiency. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Music or Bachelor of Music degree must enroll in Senior Recital and Project in the semester they intend to perform their Senior Recital, typically the last semester of their senior year. Students may enroll in the course after successfully completing the Applied Music Proficiency and meeting the performance expectations described in the Undergraduate Handbook for their specific course of study. This class provides a theological and philosophical foundation for studying the performing arts. This course examines the relationship between beauty, the arts, and the Christian life and worship. It is primarily designed as an examination of the aesthetic, cultural, and creative components of the performing arts, but it will also explore other art forms, philosophies of culture, and the arts' capacities for spiritual formation. Giving particular attention to music and theatre, this course will examine the role that the arts play in society, in the church, and in Christian worship. (3 units; Fall/Spring)

Private Instruction is offered with material and performance of increasing difficulty as the student develops. Students must arrange a lesson time before or during the first week of classes in the School of Performing Arts office or with the instructor. Twelve (12) half-hour lessons will be offered per unit. Camerata is the most advanced, select mixed (SATB) choral ensemble open by audition from all academic disciplines. Repertoire for this ensemble focuses on music composed specifically for advanced level chamber choirs. Additionally, Camerata will join other choirs and Symphony Orchestra to perform extended works composed for large musical forces. Rehearsals seek to promote vocal development, musicianship training, team work, artistic espression, and spiritual reflection. Camerata is also a service organization which performs concerts for the California Baptist University community, in the local area, and in outreach and recruitment events. Students must be enrolled in at least one ensemble for full credit each semester. Additional ensembles may be taken for zero (0) units. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) units. A survey of literature for solo voice from the Baroque to the Twentieth Century. Analysis of scores through recordings and live performances. Prerequisite: MUS 323. (3 units; Spring, odd years)

Scientific exploration into the workings of the vocal mechanism and the technique of voice production. A survey of common vocal faults with appropriate correction exercises will be discovered. Successful voice studio procedures are included. Students will demonstrate knowledge learned by privately teaching a student for one month, then once before the class. (2 units; Spring, even years)

This course is designed to prepare vocal performance majors preparing a degree recital. Focuses on all aspects of recital presentation: stage etiquette, stage presence, interpretation of vocal literature by examination of performance practices for the style and period of each piece; how to stage/dramatize an opera aria in a concert/recital setting; exploration of text meaning and derivation. The course provides the students with an appreciation and understanding of the cultural history of Jazz. Through critical listening students will learn to identify the various styles and performers associated with the traditions of Jazz. (3 units; Spring)

This course is designed to prepare students to teach jazz music. Students will receive a fundamental background in aspects of administration, preparation, directing, rehearsal, teaching, and evaluation of the various types of jazz ensembles: big bands, combos, and vocal jazz groups. Instruction for Music Education majors in the fundamentals of vocal tone production, breathing, breath control, and posture, and approaches for working with groups of singers in classroom teaching. Topics will include proper vowel formation, vocal warm-ups, register phenomena, diction and vocal health. Ministry Leadership is a study of the nature of the church, the roles of ministry leaders, and practical strategies for leadership. (3 units; Spring & Online)

Advanced development of the specific skills and techniques of conducting instrumental ensembles, including orchestra and wind band. Course includes score analysis, interpretive decisions, baton technique, verbal and non-verbal communication, and development of a conductor's knowledge of relevant instruments and transpositions. This course introduces philosophical foundations, pedagogical approaches, learning environments, curriculum and instruction, content standards, social context, and music instruction and learning with technology. Exploration of the methodologies for teaching non-performance music curricula in the classroom. Methodologies include Orff, Kodály, and Dalcroze, as well as learning theories for elementary-aged students, lesson plans, and the application of music and the arts in other disciplines. Study of the business and creative aspects of music production. Emphasis is placed on project development and tracking from demo to final product, creative and aesthetic considerations, assessing needs of artist, song selection and analysis, and artistic development and creative vision. Introduction to analog and digital audio recording and ProTools recording software. Topics covered will include microphone techniques, signal flow, recording consoles, sound capture and basic sound editing. Recording of vocal and instruments will be covered. Course builds upon Audio Recording and Studio Techniques II, exploring advanced studio recording and editing. This course is designed to explore the craft and heart of ministry in the church. It will equip future worship leaders/pastors with the practical, ministerial, and management skills needed to build, organize, and manage a thriving multi-dimensional, biblically based, worship ministry in the context of the local church worldwide. An examination of the development of worship and musical practices in the church, focusing on congregational engagement and singing. Students will study the biblical and historical practices of the church to effectively serve in worship arts and ministry. (3 units; Spring)

This course will equip worship leaders with tools and strategies to weave numerous musical and artistic elements together to design creative, coherent, and powerful worship experiences. While building community and culture for Worship Arts and Ministry students, this class focuses on the methodology and theology of effective corporate worship leadership, coaching students in platform presentation, rehearsing music ensembles, recruiting teams, and reaching worshipers, in the context of their local church internship.
