Performance and Pedagogy, BM
The BM in Performance and Pedagogy combines high level music performance training with preparation for careers in teaching, while cultivating meaningful, sustainable pathways in the performing arts.
Program Intro
The Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy at California Baptist University prepares students for professional careers as both accomplished performers and effective private instructors. The program combines intensive private (applied) study in a specific performance area (voice, piano or a primary instrument) with coursework in pedagogy, music theory, history and psychology to develop musicians who both perform and teach with excellence.
Through private instruction, individual performance, ensemble participation and supervised teaching experiences, students gain technical mastery alongside pedagogical skill, preparing them to teach in private studios, schools and churches while pursuing sustainable, performance-centered careers at the highest professional level.
Why Study Performance and Pedagogy at CBU?
A Unified Performance and Teaching Degree
This program merges the strengths of CBU's performance and human learning programs into a single curriculum that reflects today's professional music landscape. Students are prepared to thrive as performers while developing the instructional expertise essential for long-term, entrepreneurial careers in music.
Pedagogy Grounded in How People Learn
Beyond teaching methods, students study psychology and human development to better understand how learners grow, respond and succeed. This foundation enables graduates to teach more effectively across age groups and learning contexts, from private studios to schools and community programs.
Faculty with Global Artistic and Teaching Experience
Courses are taught by internationally recognized performers, scholars and educators who bring real-world professional experience into the studio and classroom. Faculty mentorship emphasizes artistic excellence, stage readiness, professional development and vocational calling.
Faith-Integrated Artistic Formation
Faith integration is woven throughout the program, connecting musical excellence with character cultivation and spiritual formation. Students learn to view their artistry as a calling, utilizing performance and teaching, both in secular and faith-based contexts, as a means to impact the world for God's ultimate glory.
