Riverside, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2019) - California Baptist University was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm for Welcome Weekend activities. Thousands of new freshmen and transfer students are expected to attend the fall 2019 semester at CBU, which begins Sept. 3.

CBU hosted international students on Aug.27-30 and students who commute on Aug. 29. Residential freshmen and transfer students moved in on Aug. 30. Welcome Weekend is a CBU tradition that helps new students get connected to campus resources and each other.

As students arrived on campus with vehicles full of luggage, CBU student volunteers lined up to help their peers move in. The volunteers unloaded vehicles, filled rolling bins with living necessities and assisted the new students to their living accommodations.

Lexi Ramos, a residential advisor at CBU, helped students check into their new rooms at The Cottages. Ramos said she was looking forward to meeting the students assigned to her area.

“I want to help students feel welcomed and become part of the CBU community,” said Ramos, a psychology senior. “I also like us to grow spiritually together and that we all get to know each other well.”

Brianne Jackson, a music and theatre freshman, said she chose CBU after attending a 24 At CBU event as a high schooler.

“The atmosphere at CBU is great. I feel so supported in my efforts,” said Jackson, a native of Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Samantha Burgett, a vocal performance and theatre freshman, said she is excited about her new journey.

“I chose CBU because they incorporate faith into all aspects of their programs,” said Burgett, a Las Vegas resident.

Students also had the opportunity to meet with different student service departments at the Events Center and receive free CBU gear.

On Friday afternoon, students met their First-Year Experience groups, which help acclimate students to campus life. They also participated in the traditional Kugel walk, where new students touch the globe, symbolizing their commitment to live a life of purpose as they begin their college experience at CBU.

CBU President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis, speaking at the President’s Welcome, encouraged students to get involved in campus life and become a part of Lancer Nation.

Other Welcome Weekend opportunities for students included time to meet with deans and faculty members; a special discount-shopping opportunity at Bed Bath & Beyond; and a Meet the Inland Empire event that informed students about nearby restaurants, shops and churches.
