CBU sending out international service teams

Riverside, Calif. (May 15, 2023) – Mobilization season is underway at California Baptist University as volunteers journey overseas for International Service Projects (ISP). 

This summer more than 150 participants comprising 21 teams will serve in 15 countries. Teams depart from CBU, from late April until mid-June, traveling to countries in Asia, Europe, Central America and Africa. They will help in various areas such as conducting sports camps, teaching conversational English, university ministry, providing healthcare and assisting with various children’s ministries.

Many teams are going to some of the least reached places in the world. ISP provides an opportunity for a CBU student to expand their worldview and see that God can use their gifts and abilities to impact the world, said Lee Stevens, director of mobilization.

“My hope is that ISP doesn’t become a seasonal experience for a student but helps develop them into a world Christian who continues to seek ways to make disciples and fulfill God’s global purposes no matter where their feet are planted,” Stevens said. 

Valeria Salas, a nursing senior, is traveling to East Africa with her team to bring medical resources to underserved communities. The trip allows her to apply what she has learned in the classroom while talking to people about God.  

“We are going to work with the local hospital and set up clinics in different villages,” Salas said. “We’re fortunate to be able to use what we’re studying for the glory of God.”  

Prior to departure, teams gather with family and friends to pray at the Kugel, a large granite globe, in the center of the Yeager Center on CBU’s campus. The base of the Kugel is inscribed with Scripture from Matthew 28:19-20 and serves as a reminder of CBU’s commitment to the Great Commission.
