About the Program
Credentialed School Psychologists, Committed To Students' Success
Accredited by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC), CBU's Master
of Science in School Psychology prepares students to fulfill the requirements for
Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology. Graduates of the program
build the knowledge, skills and experiences to help youth in today's school environments
succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
Offered through CBU's highly respected Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education, this program develops school psychologists who are highly trained to collaborate and communicate effectively, assess and evaluate students' behavior as well as learning environments, intervene and address barriers to students' success, and implement solutions to create safer, healthier and stronger educational communities.
Students of this program emerge with both a Master of Science in School Psychology and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. What's more, students who score 165 or higher on the required Praxis II Exam may also pursue qualification for the National Certificate in School Psychology through the NASP. CBU students have an outstanding track record of scoring well on the Praxis II.
Academically Rigorous, Intellectually Stimulating
CBU's school psychology graduates enter the field exceptionally well trained and rigorously
prepared in the dual disciplines of education and psychology. Building on the core
curriculum of the MS, the program encompasses specialized courses covering a range
of areas critical to becoming a successful school psychologist, including counseling,
educational assessment and intervention, clinical diagnosis, and behavioral assessments
Students also complete an intensive fieldwork internship that allows them to put theory into practice and gain hands-on experience.
Collaborators in Student Success
Beyond academic preparation, the specialization in School Psychology prepares graduates to become effective collaborators and communicators. Students emerge with the interpersonal skills to partner successfully with educators, parents and other professional to find solutions to learning and behavioral problems, increase understanding of children development, improve school policies and procedures, and strengthen relationships across school, home and community.
Advancing Your Practice
CBU's MS in School Psychology offers a solid educational foundation for students interested in becoming Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEPs), required for entering private practice. LEPs must earn a minimum of a master's degree in a relevant area of study, plus three years full-time experience as a credentialed school psychologist. Students also have the opportunity to pursue a Certificate in Advanced Training and Specialization (CASP) to advance their knowledge and profession in the areas of:
- Assessment of English Learners
- Functional Analysis and Behavior Intervention
- School Crisis Prevention, Response and Intervention
Principled School Psychologists
In keeping with CBU's faith-based mission, this program focuses on developing educators and school psychologists of outstanding moral character and ethical behavior. Graduates of the program share a deeply rooted commitment to recognize and realize the potential of every child and student — across a diversity of cultures, backgrounds and demographics.
Practical Courses, Taught By Professional Faculty
Students build not only a theoretical understanding of school psychology, but also the practical skills and experience to apply lessons learned in class to the school environment. Faculty bring their knowledge as working professionals to the coursework and classrooms, developing students who are well prepared for the real world of school psychology. Leading the faculty is the program coordinator, a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) and working school psychologist for more than 14 years. CBU students benefit directly from this expertise.
