Master of Science in Applied Mathematics

Innovation through mathematical problem solving is needed in every field imaginable: physics and engineering, business, economics and technology, computer science, to healthcare, weather and biology, and many more in between. The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics curriculum is designed to help students identify challenging real-world problems in these fields, formulate a mathematical model that effectively addresses the problems and use models to obtain real-world solutions. The M.S. in Applied Mathematics program is tailored for students who wish to apply mathematical techniques to life and social sciences, with an emphasis on solving new problems in a rapidly changing world.

The program integrates a faith-based perspective into a foundation of mathematical theory and concepts. The main course sequence focuses on the topics of differential equations, complex and numerical analysis, scientific computing and linear programing, applied statistics and math biology. Students will also be able to communicate the results of their research and application through reports and presentations. With these skills, graduates will be able to significantly contribute to a competitive work force or pursue a PhD program in applied mathematics or a related field.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), states that there are new mathematical needs emerging in science, engineering, industry, and technology. Additionally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth projection of employment for mathematicians is 23 percent from 2012 to 2022. This is much faster than the average for all occupations, and is largely due to the increase of technology and use of data. Businesses need mathematicians to analyze the increasing volume of electronic data for research and privacy concerns.
