About the Program
Preparing Educators to Change the World
CBU’s highly respected Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education now offers a Master of Science in Education with a Specialization in International Education. One of the only programs of its kind in the region, the Specialization in International Education prepares students for the rewards, opportunities and experiences of teaching in a wide range of educational settings overseas.
A unique program, the Specialization in International Education also presents a wealth of unique opportunities for individuals seeking to engage the minds and enrich the lives of young people around the globe. Students pursuing the Specialization may choose to complete one half of their student teaching and their practicum requirements overseas, as well as simultaneously work toward a California teaching credential.
Whether teaching at home or abroad, graduates of this rare program emerge with the skills, experiences and global perspective to make a lasting difference in their students’ lives.
Opening Doors to Overseas Opportunities
Widely recognized and respected across the region, the Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education has also fostered strong relationships with the international education community. Students of our program will benefit from our relationship with such organizations as the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS), a consortium of 20 outstanding schools in 16 countries — many of them developing nations. NICS actively recruits and values graduates of our program, and can connect our students to an array of teaching opportunities overseas.
Flexible Options for Everyone
Our students come to the program from all walks of life, and with a range of professional goals. The Specialization in International Education offers two flexible options to fit a variety of career paths in education.
- Option 1: Students have the opportunity to earn their Master of Science, without earning a California teaching credential, in just 39 units.
- Option 2: For those seeking to become credentialed teachers, students may also work toward a California Single Subject or Multiple Subject credential while completing their Master’s. Some professional methods courses may be used to meet degree requirements.
Study Abroad, Teach Abroad
Through our relationship with NICS and other international educator recruiters as well as through CBU’s popular International Service Projects (ISPs), we offer students the unique opportunity to fulfill one half of their required semester of student teaching overseas. Students who choose this option complete seven weeks of student teaching under the guidance of credentialed teachers at accredited international schools with excellent academic records.
Preparing Educators with a World View
CBU’s Master of Science in Education with a Specialization in International Education develops teachers who have a positive impact on the learning and lives of students across countries, cultures and religions. Building on the core curriculum of the Master of Science, the program includes specialized courses that explore intercultural and comparative education, the role and history of education overseas, as well as current topics in international education. Graduates emerge from the program with a solid — and often first-hand — understanding of what it takes to teach effectively in another country.
Educators with Ethics
The program also builds on CBU’s faith-based mission to prepare educators with strong ethical standards who are dedicated to making the world a better place. Many of our graduates go on to teach impoverished and disadvantaged children in developing nations around the globe — transforming the lives and futures of the students they encounter. The Christian principles and moral code our graduates develop at CBU guide them as they live their purpose and make a difference in the world.
Faculty with Worldwide Experience
Further strengthening the program is our outstanding faculty who bring a world of knowledge into the classroom. With extensive experience teaching, traveling and living overseas, our faculty share a global perspective and understanding of international education on a practical level. Committed to expanding educational opportunities around the world, they are equally committed to the success of our students right here on campus.
