Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology
The Kinesiology major prepares students for graduate studies and careers in fitness-related industries, teaching, coaching, and health science related fields such as physical therapy, public health, and chiropractic care.
Program Design and Career Opportunities
Kinesiology is an academic area focused on the study of human motion and body mechanics that prepares students for career opportunities in a variety of physical activity, rehabilitation, sport, and wellness settings. CBU's Kinesiology major will provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies to work in professional fields such as athletic training, exercise science, fitness, teaching, coaching, and allied health. Students receive a broad understanding of the principles of kinesiology as well as a marketable set of skills designed to enhance the health, wellness, and physical performance of the individuals they serve. This major prepares students for relevant professional certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and other scholarly organizations, as well as for further graduate study in related fields.
Kinesiology Program Student Outcomes
Demonstrate active involvement in their field through membership in at least one professional organization.
Demonstrate an essential knowledge of movement anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and motor skill refinement prior to graduation.
Demonstrate having worked at least fifteen hours as a volunteer in a teaching, coaching, officiating, ministry, or related position while enrolled as a CBU undergraduate.
Demonstrate an ability to effectively read, evaluate, and utilize research related to physical education or exercise science.
Demonstrate comprehension of personal wellness and holistic health concepts.
Demonstrate the ability to apply computer technology to fulfillment of their professional responsibilities.
Concentration Specific Outcomes
Kinesiology students in the physical education concentration will demonstrate the ability to develop and implement appropriate unit plans based on California State Standards.
Kinesiology students in the physical education concentration will demonstrate mastery of physical education concepts, teaching methods, and learning styles prior to graduation.
Kinesiology students in the exercise science concentration will demonstrate nutritional competency through the process of dietary analysis.
Kinesiology students in the exercise science concentration will demonstrate the ability to create an accurate fitness prescription.
Kinesiology students in the sports medicine concentration will demonstrate competence in providing acute injury management and emergency care for physically active individuals through relevant First Responder certification.
Kinesiololgy students in the sports medicine concentration will demonstrate understanding of the role of the Athletic Trainer in providing health care to physically active individuals through relevant field experiences in rehabilitation-related professions.

KIN304 Intoduction to Athletic Training
This course is designed to introduce the student to the vocabulary, theories, principles, and skills involved with the profession of athletic training. A special emphasis is placed on the Athletic Training profession including the various health care professions and responsibilities, administration, and legal concerns; risk management including nutritional concerns, protective equipment, and prophylactic taping, wrapping, and bracing; Acute Injury Management including emergency care and universal precautions; and basic Health Care Administration. While the course content is directed to the preparation of students who would like to pursue future education in a n entry-level graduate athletic training program, it is also pertinent to other therapeutic and sports medicine related sub-disciplines. KIN312 Emergencies in Sports Medicine
This course prepares the student to be a First Responder and ready to give emergency care required for catastrophic and/or life-threatening injuries and illness to physically active individuals. Completion of this course provides certification in professional rescuer CPR, Bloodborne pathogens, AED and First Aid. Students may only earn credit for either KIN 212 or KIN 312. (3 units)
