Employers interested in hosting a California Baptist University student intern are encouraged to register as an employer on CBU Career Connect and post the job description for the opportunity. All internships, whether paid, or unpaid, must meet the criteria for academic credit in order to be posted as an "internship" on CBU Career Connect. We can assist employers in the connection process with students who may be most interested in your opportunity but cannot assign a student to an internship.
Why should I sponsor a student intern?
At CBU, an internship is viewed as a learning experience for the student, and we hope employers will join us in that endeavor! But employers also experience many benefits when they offer an internship to a college student. In addition to the satisfaction of mentoring and developing the next generation of talented professionals, companies and organizations benefit through:
- Year round source of highly motivated pre-professionals
- Quality candidates for temporary or seasonal positions and projects
- Freedom for professional staff to pursue more creative projects
- Flexible, cost-effective work force not requiring a long-term site sponsor commitment
- Proven, cost-effective way to recruit and evaluate potential employees. According to the 2008 Experiential Education Survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers:
- 90% of employer respondents indicated the primary purpose for sponsoring an internship is to recruit entry-level talent
- Offers of full-time employment as a result of the internship increased from 56.9% in 2001 to 69.6% in 2008
- Interns converted to full-time hires increased from 35.6% in 2001 to 50.5% in 2008
- Employer respondents reported higher retention rates for those with internship experience, compared to those who had none
Paid vs. Unpaid?
It is important to realize that some unpaid internships may have legal limitations, and simply requiring a student to enroll for academic credit for an unpaid internship may not absolve the legal responsibility of an employer to pay an individual for work performed. For-profit companies are more likely to run this risk with an unpaid internship, but it is helpful for non-profits and government agencies to consider these implications as well.
What is the criteria to sponsor an internship?
To ensure that an experience is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship, all the following criteria must be met:
- The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
- The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
- The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
- There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student's academic coursework.
- There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
- There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
- There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
