Lancers basketball picks up PacWest Honors

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (March 6, 2014)– PacWest regular season champion California Baptist claimed four individual awards and five all-conference honors, as the All-PacWest men’s basketball teams were announced Thursday, prior to the start of the conference tournament. Ryan Berg became the first player in PacWest history to be named player and freshman of the year in the same season, while also earning a first team All-PacWest honor.

California Baptist’s Chris Brown was named the inaugural PacWest Defensive Player of the Year and Rick Croy received the PacWest Coach of the Year honor in his first season at the helm of the Lancers. Point Loma’s Hayden Lescault was named PacWest Newcomer of the Year.

Berg ranked sixth in the conference in scoring (17.5 ppg), while leading in free throws (124) and ranking third in three-pointers (73). He scored in double-figures in all-but three games on the year. He exploded onto the PacWest scene when he made eight three-pointers and scored 34 points in a win over nationally-ranked Dixie State, which gave CBU a 15-0 record. Berg was the second-best scorer in conference games, averaging 18.6 ppg.

The Lancers earned five All-PacWest team members, the most of any school. Along with Berg, Anthony Cosentino was a second-team pick, Brown was named to the third team, and Kevin Crabb and Ivan Patterson were honorable mention selections. CBU won its first-ever PacWest regular-season title with an 18-2 conference record and climbed as high as No. 7 in the national rankings, finishing the regular season 24-2. The Lancers started the season 16-0, the best opening record in school history.

Dixie State landed four selections, and BYU-Hawaii, Dominican and Point Loma each had three. The other members of the first team included Chaminade’s Lee Bailey, Dominican’s Devin Golston, Fresno Pacific’s Malcolm Griffin, Azusa Pacific’s Troy Leaf, Hawai’i Pacific’s Justin Long and Dixie State’s Zach Robbins.
