Team of 5 Alumni leave for China to teach English

Five CBU alumni became a team and a family to each other as they prepared to teach English Language and Culture to college students for the next year at Jilin University in the capital city of Changchun, Jilin Province, located in Northeastern China.

The alums include Justin Howard (’11), Mercedes Vasquez Howard (’10 and ‘12), Ryan Arch (’12), Lizbeth Arias (’13) and Tyler Garrison (’13).  This summer, the team members completed extensive training at CBU and are now TEFL certified.  Carla Liu, Assistant Professor of English and TESOL, prepared and taught the curriculum during a six week session of training. This International Teaching Program involved pedagogical training in teaching English to second language learners overseas. Cultural knowledge in the values, beliefs, ideology, communication and educational styles of the host country were also covered in the training. Trainees were taught how to appropriately interact with the Chinese in a way that exemplified a Christ-like attitude. In addition, several visitors with experience teaching in China visited the class to share pertinent information.
